Robert Doud Martin, Sr., age 87, died in Gig Harbor, Washington on Thursday October 18, 2012, surrounded by family and close friends. Born in Tacoma on June 19, 1925, Bob grew up on Commencement Bay, beginning a lifelong attraction all things maritime. He was the son of Ross and Geneva ("Neva") Martin. Bob graduated from Stadium High School and continued his education at the University of Washington. While there, he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity where he made friends that lasted a lifetime. When WWII started, Bob enlisted with the NROTC and was assigned to the LST 451 (a tank landing craft). He saw action in the Pacific theater and his ship was tasked with fighting the Japanese in order to take control of several islands including Saipan, Tinian, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf and Okinawa Gunto. In 1945, he mustered out of the Navy as a Lieutenant J.G. After the war, Bob returned to his studies at the University where he turned out for crew. A natural oarsman, Bob was proud to earn a gold medal in the men's coxed fours event at the 1948 Olympics in London with teammates Warren Westlund, Bob Will, Gordy Giovanelli and Allan Morgan. He graduated with a B.A. in Business and began a long and successful career in the timber industry, employed with Weyerhaeuser, where he worked until his retirement, leaving in 1982 as Vice President of Special Products. In 1952 Bob married Virginia Lutz and together they welcomed four sons into the world, Bob Jr., Donald, Patrick, and Matthew. In the early years of their marriage, the couple bought and remodeled a farm in Cromwell. Soon after, his career took him and his young family to live in Baltimore, Coos Bay and Arcadia. In 1965, they returned to Gig Harbor and built another farm near Sunny Bay. They divorced in 1973, after twenty years of marriage. Never one to go small, and in keeping with his love affair of the sea, Bob purchased the LESLIE FOSS in 1967 - a WW II vintage 127' wooden tugboat. Bob and his family enjoyed the tug over many summers, vacationing in Canada on Octopus Island, where he and his Olympic crewmates shared ownership of the island. Bob remarried Pam Wilkes Koste in 1975. Tragically, a year later, he lost his son Patrick in a terrible accident. But as Bob often said, he gained another son, David, from Pam's previous marriage. Still happily married at the time of his death, Bob and Pam enjoyed 37 years together, with many happy summers spent in Canada, relaxing with friends and family, enjoying the sea's bounty. In 1987, Bob and Pam built their dream home above the Harbor, never tiring of the view. It was from this vantage that Bob spent his final years close to the water that he loved, happy always to greet the many visitors who stopped by. He never lost his keen mind and desire to learn something new every day. He spoke with authority on a wide range of subjects and was an avid reader all of his life. His family misses him terribly for the larger than life man that he was. He was dearly loved. Bob is preceded in death by his son Patrick. He is survived by his wife Pam, and sons: Bob Jr. and Barbara Hendricksen of Anchorage, AK; Don Martin and Meridith Lawrence of Seattle; Matt and Tracy Martin of Gig Harbor; and David and Dawn Koste of Gig Harbor. He was beloved by his granddaughter, Heather Martin McGough of Maple Valley, her husband, Brian and their three children Keilen, Logan and Gabriella and by grandsons Ross Martin, Max Martin and Haakon Koste, all of Gig Harbor. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM November 16th at the Agnus Dei Lutheran Church (10511 Peacock Hill Avenue NW, Gig Harbor). Marvin married Oliver Wood Purdy, son of David Purdy and Elizabeth Ann Hopkins, on 21 January 1851. Amanda C. Marvin died on 17 January 1899 at Red Wing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota, at age 68.⁴ She was buried on 19 January 1899 at Hope Cemetery, Featherstone Twsp., Goodhue Co., Minnesota.^5,6

Mrs. Oliver W. Purdy, died at 4:30 o'clock, this morning, at her home in Featherstone. She was born in the state of New York and about 68 years old. She has been a resident of this county of over twenty years. She leaves a husband and one daughter to mourn her death. The funeral service will be held at the residence on Thursday morning, at 10:30 o'clock, and at the church at Featherstone at 11 o'clock.

In Memoriam, Amanda C. Purdy, wife of Oliver W. Purdy. Amanda C. Marvin was born in Tompkins county, N.Y., July 13, 1830, and died at her home in Featherstone, Jan. 17, 1899; age, 68 years, 6 months and 4 days. On Jan. 21, 1851, she was united in marriage to Oliver Purdy, who, with one daughter, remains to mourn. The family moved from Wisconsin to this state in 1876, and soon after settled on a farm in Featherstone, where success and prosperity attended their toil.
She was a woman of peculiar tact and grace; endowed as she was with a cheerful disposition, and a cultivated mind, she won the hearts of all whom she came in contact with. She had the rare gift of adapting herself to her surroundings and environments. With a company of children and youth, she was one of them, and would fully enter into their pleasures and enjoyments; with those who were weary and faltering in the conflict of every day life, her cheerful words and looks always gave courage strength and hope; with the sorrowing- and much there is all about us- she was the angel of mercy who, unasked would come into the stricken home, and with words and deeds of love, bring a ray of light and hope, to the afflicted ones. She was of strong religious disposition and dearly loved the house of God, and was in her place there, even after health had failed. She was one of those queenly characters well fitted to fill any position in the land, but her home was her throne, and right royally did she reign there. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Cahoon, assisted by her former pastor, Rev. H.J. Harrington.

     Ezra Marvin married Hulda Chase. Ezra Marvin was born on 18 January 1806 at New York. He died on 1 October 1871 at age 65.

     Clarence Theodore Mason was born on 4 June 1884 at Fulton Co., Illinois. He married Jessie Harn, daughter of Fred Harn and Alice Austin, on 2 July 1904. Clarence Theodore Mason died on 13 December 1969 at Cuba, Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 85.

     Donald Clarence Mason was born on 16 February 1914 at Fulton Co., Illinois. He was the son of Clarence Theodore Mason and Jessie Harn. Donald Clarence Mason died on 13 February 1992 at Cuba, Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 77.

     Eleanor F. Mason was born on 10 July 1916 at Fulton Co., Illinois. She was the daughter of Clarence Theodore Mason and Jessie Harn. Eleanor F. Mason died on 29 March 1994 at Lewistown, Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 77.
