     Sara Josephine Longley was born on 15 April 1849 at Harris Twsp., Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.¹ She was the daughter of Andrew Longley and Mary Ruple (Rupel). Sara Josephine Longley married John M. Shimp, son of Jacob Shimp and Hannah Graham, on 16 March 1870 at Greene Twsp., Saint Joseph Co., Indiana. Sara Josephine Longley died on 30 December 1931 at Harris Twsp., Saint Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 82.² She was buried on 2 January 1932 at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.²

     Sarah Longley was born circa 1842 at Indiana.¹ She was the daughter of Thomas Longley and Mary Rupel. Sarah Longley died on 12 November 1909 at Greene Twsp., Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.²

     Thomas Longley was born circa 1807 at Pennsylvania.¹ He married Mary Rupel, daughter of Jacob Rupel and Ann Livengood, on 17 July 1831 at Elkhart Co., Indiana.²

     William H. Longley was born on 15 April 1846 at South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana. He was the son of Andrew Longley and Mary Ruple (Rupel). William H. Longley was born on 3 October 1846 at Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana.¹ He married Helen L. Searle, daughter of Richard Searle and female (?), on 14 December 1871 at Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.² William H. Longley died on 17 August 1935 at South William St., South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 89.¹ He was buried on 20 August 1935 at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.¹

William H. Longley was born in Elkhart county, Ind., October 3, 1846, and is the son of Andrew and Mary Longley, the former a native of Pennsylvania, and the latter of Indiana. His father came to this state in 1834, and located in Elkhart county, where he resided until 1853; he then came to this county and located on Portage Prairie, and soon afterward moved to Sumption's Prairie, where he now resides. Mr. Longley remained at home on the farm until he was 16 years old, then entered the University of Notre Dame, where he took a full commercial course, and graduated in 1867; he them entered the dry goods house of John Brownfield, Esq., where he has since been engaged as salesman and book-keeper.
He was married in this city, to Miss Helen L. Searle of the same place, December 14, 1871, a daughter of Richard Searle Esq., of this place, and was born in Pennsylvania in 1848; they have one son, born January 28, 1878. In 1868 John N. Lederer formed a partnership with A.T. Coquillard and W. H. Longley. They purchased large tracts of land in Boone county, Nebraska, and platted and laid out the village of St. Edwards. In August, 1876, they formed a stock company, known as "The St. Edward's Land and Emigration Company". Mr. Longley is treasurer of the St. Edwards Land and Emigration Company, and also of the Wisconsin Land and Emigration Company of this city. Politically, he is a Democrat.

Hon. W.H. Longley, ex-mayor of South Bend, and president of the Northern Indiana Hedge Fence Company, is a native of Elkhart county, Ind., where he was born on October 3, 1846, a son of Andrew and Mary Longley, natives of Pennsylvania and Elkhart County, Ind., respectively. The paternal grandfather, William Longley, removed from his native State to Elkhart county, Ind., about 1834, of which section he was among the pioneer settlers. They came thither in wagons and located in the vicinity of Elkhart, where Mr. Longley purchased a heavily timbered and very wild tract of land. The Indians were still plentiful throughout the region, but were not hostile. On this farm the grandfather was called from life. About 1853 Andrew Longley came to St. Joseph county and settled on Sumption Prairie, where, until within a few years, he followed agricultural pursuits. Three children were born to himself and wife: William H., Josephine and Mercy. William H. Longley, the subject of this sketch, remained with and assisted his father on the home farm until he we was twenty-on years of age, receiving the advantages of the district schools in the vicinity of his rural home, his education being completed in Notre Dame College, from the commercial department of which he graduated in 1867. Soon after this he entered the dry goods store of John Brownfield, where he remained until 1888, at which time he engaged in the manufacture of knit underwear; He was one of the incorporators of the A.C. Staley Manufacturing Company, of which he was made vice-president, and held the office until elected to the position of mayor of South Bend. He is still a stockholder in this concern, and is also one of the incorporators of the Northern Indiana Hedge Fence Company. He is a stockholder in the St. Edwards Land and Insurance Company of St. Edwards, Neb. He was elected Mayor of South Bend in 1888, was re-elected 1890, during which time he was careful to guard the interests of the city and made a very efficient official. In 1882 he was made councilman from the Second Ward, in which capacity he served one term. He is one of the leading spirits of the city, and is always a leader in public enterprises. He is a member of the A.F. & A.M., the K. of P., being a charter member of the Crusade Lodge, No. 14, and also belongs to the Uniform Rank. He has been a married man since 1872, at which time Miss Helen Searle became his wife, and eventually the mother of a son and two daughters: Howard, Mary and Edna. Mr. Longley has a goodly amount of this world's goods, and is a successful and intelligent business man.³ He appeared on the census of 1900 at Portage Twsp., South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana. He lived in 1901 at 215 S. William St., South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana. He appeared on the census of 1920 at South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana; E.D. 237, sheet 8. He appeared on the census of 28 April 1930 at Portage Twsp., South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana; In the 1930 Indiana Census, William H. Longley listed as 83 years old, born in Indiana, widowed, 25 years old at first marriage. He lived on 30 December 1931 at South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.⁴

W.H. LONGLEY, EX-MAYOR, DIES
William H. Longley, South Bend's eight mayor, died at 8:30 o'clock Saturday night at the age of 88 years in his home at 215 South William street. He had been in failing health for several years and his death was attributed to the infirmities of age.
Mr. Longley was the second democratic mayor of South Bend, elected first in 1888 and again in 1890. In those days the term was for two years. During the years he held office, many notable improvements were made in the city. He also served in 1882 as councilman from the Second ward and was one of the incorporators of the former A.C. Staley Manufacturing company, of which he was vice-president until 1888. This company later became the Stephenson Underwear mills, now out of existence.
Born Oct. 3, 1846, in Elkhart, Ind., Mr. Longley came to South Bend at an early age and was married to Miss Helen Searle. Mrs. Longley died several years ago. His father, Andrew Longley, was born in Pennsylvania and his mother, Mary Longley, was a native of Elkhart county. They settled on a farm at Sumption Prairie, St. Joseph county, in 1853.
After receiving the usual common school education in the district school William Longley attended the University of Notre Dame and was graduated in 1867 with a degree in commerce. When he first came to South Bend Mr. Longley entered the dry goods store of John Brownfield and was employed there until he was first elected mayor of South Bend.
In 1892 he became a member of the firm of Beeper & Longley, manufacturers of brick. Later he became a sewer contractor in connection with the late Charles Knott but he retired years before his death.
Three children survive. They are Howard Longley, of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Mary Altgelt and Miss Edna Longley, both of South Bend. One granddaughter, Mrs. Carl Prell, and a sister, Mrs. G.B. Summers, also reside in this city.
The body may be viewed in the residence from Monday morning until the hour of the funeral Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services will be conducted in the residence by Rev. Charles Tupper Baillie, D.D., pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Highland cemetery.
Mr. Longley was a member of the Crusade Lodge No. 14, Knights of Pythias, and was also a member of the Masonic fraternity. His death leaves four ex-mayors of South Bend living. They are Fred W. Keller, Eli F. Seebirt, Chester R. Montgomery and W.R. Hinkle.¹

Funeral Notes
A change was been made in the funeral plans for William H. Longley, former mayor of South Bend, who died Saturday night in his home, 215 South William street. The body will lie in the residence from 9 o'clock Tuesday morning until the funeral there at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, instead of throughout today. Pallbearers will be Walter McInerny, William K. Lamport, William A. Sarlee, of Mishawaka; Delbert Simp (SIC), of Granger, this county; Carl Prell and Herman Altgelt.⁵

     Mary Marilla Loomis married Phineas Cromwell Williams.
     Her married name was Williams.

     Ann Loring married Benjamin Ruple, son of Martin Ruple and Nancy Miller.

     Nehmiah Lounsbury married Margaret Purdy, daughter of Ebenezer Purdy and Eunice Purdy, on 19 June 1824.

     Robert Love was born on 28 February 1847 at Schuyler Co., New York.¹ He was the son of William Love and Margarette (?). Robert Love married Mary L. Hanmer, daughter of Peter Hanmer and Ruth Anna Bacon, on 26 March 1873 at Tyrone, Schuyler Co., New York.¹ Robert Love died on 2 March 1935 at age 88.¹ He was buried at Tyrone, Schuyler Co., New York.¹

     Ruth Love was born on 16 January 1883 at Pine Grove, Tyrone, Schuyler Co., New York.¹ She was the daughter of Robert Love and Mary L. Hanmer. Ruth Love married Guy R. Caywood, son of Joseph G. Caywood and Sarah Jane Purdy, on 31 December 1907. Ruth Love died on 24 June 1960 at Tyrone, Schuyler Co., New York, at age 77.¹ She was buried at Tyrone, Schuyler Co., New York.
     Her married name was Caywood. She appeared on the census of 9 May 1930 at Tyrone, Schuyler Co., New York. Her Ancestral File Number is RGTL-ZS, submitted by Karen C. McKenna.

     William Love was born circa 1822 at Schuyler Co., New York.¹ He married Margarette (?).

     Isabella Loveing was born circa 1869 at New York. She married William J. Perkins, son of Timothy Ellsworth Perkins and Rhoda A. Boston, circa 1900.¹
     As of circa 1900,her married name was Perkins. Isabella Loveing appeared on the census of 20 January 1920 at Porterville Twsp., Tulare Co., California.² As of 1930, Isabella Loveing was also known as Isabel. She appeared on the census of 7 April 1930 at Porterville Twsp., Tulare Co., California; listed as 61 years old, born in New York, 31 years old at first marriage, parents born in New York, enumerated with husband William J. Perkins and four their children.¹

     Esther May Lovejoy was born in 1907.¹ She married John Henry (Harry) Detwiler after 1931.¹ Esther May Lovejoy was buried in 1982 at Washington.¹ She died in 1982 at Washington.¹
     As of after 1935,her married name was Detwiler.¹

     Dorene Marie Loverink is the daughter of Jeppie Jack Loverink and Marie Van Welzen.¹ Dorene Marie Loverink married Dennis Le Roy Richards, son of Abe Paul Richards and Florence Irene Andrews, on 18 July 1959.¹

     Jeppie Jack Loverink married Marie Van Welzen.

     Amelia Jane Lowman was the daughter of Perry Lowman and Eliza Harn. Amelia Jane Lowman married Cephas Sheckles.

     Annie E. Lowman was the daughter of John W. Lowman and Cidney Ann Goswell.

     Dennis C. Lowman was born on 28 September 1834.¹ He was the son of Perry Lowman and Eliza Harn. Dennis C. Lowman married Amelia C. Fogel on 22 November 1860.¹ Dennis C. Lowman died on 18 February 1901 at age 66.¹
