Betty Jane Thompson

Betty Jane Thompson, 72, of Kasson, MN passed away Thursday, December 16th at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester, MN. She was born July 9, 1949, in St. Paul, MN to Donald and Doris Spilman. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Mantorville, MN.

Growing up, Betty shared responsibilities with her 7 siblings working in their parents’ store. She graduated in 1967 from Kasson-Mantorville High School in Kasson, MN.

Betty married the love of her life, Gary Thompson, of Byron, MN on August 2, 1969. While Gary served in the military, they spent time in Wichita, KS as well as Victorville, CA before being discharged and moving back to the Kasson-Mantorville area.

Shortly after her retirement from Mayo Clinic in 2009, Gary and Betty moved to Breezy Point, MN where they spent 10 years before returning to the Kasson area. Betty enjoyed boating, fishing, snowmobiling, cooking & baking, playing cards, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Gary Thompson; her children Chad Thompson (Michelle Junge), Jeremy (Mickel) Thompson, and Jodi Skurdahl (Travis Allen); her grandchildren Alexis, Payton, Chloe, Ryker, and Brody; and siblings Jeannie Bartel, Donald Spilman, Delores Brown, Donna Peterson, and Doris Tilbury. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Doris Spilman and brothers Daniel and Davey Spilman.

The Thompson family would like to extend their gratitude to Cottagewood Senior Community for their gracious care of Betty during her stay. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting contributions to them with a portion to be donated to Lewy Body Dementia research.

     Davey Harn Spilman was born on 30 June 1955 at Dodge Center, Dodge Co., Minnesota. He was the son of Donald Walter Spilman and Doris Alice Harn. Davey Harn Spilman was never married. He died on 7 June 1972 at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Olmsted Co., Minnesota, at age 16.¹ The cause of death was chronic active hepatitis, ill for 4 years. Davey died while waiting for a liver transplant donor.¹ He was buried in June 1972 at Evergreen Cemetery, Mantorville, Dodge Co., Minnesota.² SOURCE: Doris Spilman.

     Delores Lynn Spilman is the daughter of Donald Walter Spilman and Doris Alice Harn. Delores Lynn Spilman married Stanley Arthur Brown in 1980 at Hinsdale, DuPage Co., Illinois.

     Donald Kenneth Spilman was born on 4 January 1943 at St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota. He was the son of Donald Walter Spilman and Doris Alice Harn. Donald Kenneth Spilman was baptized circa 1951 at Baptist Church, Kasson, Dodge Co., Minnesota.^1,2 He graduated in 1961 at Kasson-Mantorville High School, Kasson, Dodge Co., Minnesota.³ He married Barbara Gail Dalton, daughter of William Dalton and Delores Lucille Miller, on 15 May 1965 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Rochester, Olmsted Co., Minnesota.¹ Retired from United Parcel Service after 25 years. Donald Kenneth Spilman lived at 3125 N. Granite Reef, Scottsdale, Maricopa Co., Arizona; lived at this address from about 1988 until about 1999. He lived in July 2003 at 10506 E. Betony Dr., Scottsdale, Maicopa Co., Arizona.⁴ Following in email from Stacy Yoder on 30May2016:

'... My Dad (Donnie) is doing pretty well but he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease about a year and a half ago. I live close to my parents and see them daily. He really likes to reminisce about his childhood so I still hear quite a few "French Lake Stories."⁵ ' He died on 2 February 2022 at Shadow Mountain Memory Care, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona, at age 79.³

Donald Kenneth Spilman, 79, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away at Shadow Mountain Memory Care in Phoenix on February 2, 2022.

Don was born to Donald Walter and Doris Alice Spilman in St. Paul. The Spilman family relocated to Mantorville in 1949 and went on to own Don & Doris' Barber and Beauty Shops. Entrepreneurial and hardworking at a young age, Don earned extra money by sweeping the steps at the Opry House, paper routes, bailing hay and providing lawn care services. A proud KoMet, Don graduated from Kasson-Mantorville High School where he was one of the top wrestlers in the state earning the moniker, "Mat Man."

Don worked at the Hubbell House in various capacities throughout high school. After high school, Don wrestled and attended community college for a year, after which he attended barber school and started a lengthy career at United Parcel Service. He also worked alongside his father in the barber shop on weekends.

Don married the love of his life, Barbara, and they made their first home in Lake City. Don and Barb raised their two children, Stacy and John, in Inver Grove Heights.

After Don retired from UPS, the family relocated to Scottsdale, where Don worked for PCS.

Don loved being a grandpa and spent his days off and retirement years as head carpool driver and mentor for his five grandchildren. Don may have left Mantorville, however, Mantorville never left Don.

Everybody loved Don - there is no other way to say it. He was a good person who always had a humorous story to tell with a twinkle in his eye and loved hearing stories in return. Don never knew a stranger.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Davey and Daniel, sisters Jean and Betty Jane. Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barb, daughter Stacy (Robert), son John (Terri) and five grandchildren Anna, John, Sara, Sophie, and Grace. Don is also survived by sisters Delores, Doris and Donna Kaye (Mike), uncle Bill, brothers-in-law Don and Gary, along with 18 nieces and nephews and several cousins.

     Donna Kaye Spilman is the daughter of Donald Walter Spilman and Doris Alice Harn. Donna Kaye Spilman married Jessie Andrew Fiorella, son of Andrew Joseph Fiorella and Jennie Salee, on 22 January 1966 at St. John's Church, Kasson, Dodge Co., Minnesota.² Donna Kaye Spilman and Jessie Andrew Fiorella were divorced on 15 March 1977 at Ramsey Co., Minnesota. Donna Kaye Spilman married David James Schak, son of Harry Allen Schak and Helen Irene Beach, on 15 September 1984 at Chisago Co., Minnesota. Donna Kaye Spilman and David James Schak were divorced. Donna Kaye Spilman married Michael L. Peterson.³

     Doris Ann Spilman is the daughter of Donald Walter Spilman and Doris Alice Harn. Doris Ann Spilman married Richard Frederick Tilbury, son of Donald Elmer Tilbury and Joyce Frances Eberhart, on 25 March 1967 at Mantorville, Dodge Co., Minnesota.² Doris Ann Spilman and Richard Frederick Tilbury were divorced.

     Jaime Rose Spilman is the daughter of Daniel George Spilman and Jean Elaine Robb. Jaime Rose Spilman married Jason Allen Putz, son of Allen Herman Putz and Rita Ann Bork, on 31 October 2009 at Winona Co., Minnesota.

     Jean Marie Spilman was born on 28 April 1941 at St. Joseph Hospital, St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota.² She was the daughter of Donald Walter Spilman and Doris Alice Harn. Jean Marie Spilman was baptized circa 1950 at Baptist Church, Kasson, Dodge Co., Minnesota.³ Jean Marie Spilman was a saleswoman. She graduated in 1959 at Kasson-Mantorville High School, Kasson, Dodge Co., Minnesota.² She married Newton Ames Kennedy, son of Everett Kennedy and Elizabeth (?), on 26 June 1971 at 1st Congregational Church, Mantorville, Dodge Co., Minnesota.³ Jean Marie Spilman and Newton Ames Kennedy were divorced in 1984. Jean Marie Spilman married Daniel Paul Bartel, son of Paul Emil Bartel and Dorothy Seykora Barrel Meek, on 15 September 1991 at Orlando, Orange Co., Florida. Two step children: Denise and Chari Kennedy. Jean Marie Spilman was a Presbyterian. Jean Marie Bartel, 80, Lexington, S.C., died on December 28, 2021.

She was born April 28, 1941 to Don and Doris Spilman. Jean graduated from K-M High School in 1959 and attended Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis.

After her first marriage failed, she found and later married Dan Bartel, formerly of Kasson and chef at the Hubbell House. They build a house together in the mountains of North Carolina.

A private ceremony was held in Lexington, S.C.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; her parents, Don and Doris Spilman; sister Betty Thompson; brothers, Daniel and Davey Spilman.

She is survived by her brother, Donald, and sisters, Donna, Delores and Doris.
