Barbara Jean Schmidt

Barbara Jean Schmidt, age 62, of Helena, passed away Friday, June 21 in Helena.

Barb was born March 12, 1951 in St Ignatius, Montana to Phillip and Florence Schmitz of Ronan. She attended and graduated from Ronan High School and later attended Montana State University in Bozeman. Barb majored in interior design and architecture.

She worked and lived in Bozeman for many years where she met R. Loren Schmidt. They were married in 1979 and had one child, a daughter, Skylure Schmidt. They lived in Nebraska for several years before Barb and Skylure moved back to Montana. She worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Helena for over 20 years and retired this last April.

Barb loved gardening, making her home and yard beautiful, being outdoors, her family, along with all of her beloved horses, dogs, and cats that adopted her over the years. Barb was a beautiful lady who left her special touch on all she met.

She is survived by her daughter Skylure of Missoula, sisters: Cherryl (Jim) Taylor of Helena, Dee Marie of Manchester, Washington, Sheila Conner of Ronan; several aunts, and a number of nieces and nephews. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Florence Schmitz along with her brother Phillip A Schmitz of Ronan.

A Celebration of Barbara’s Life is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, at Retz Funeral Home Chapel, 315 E 6th Ave., with a reception to follow the service in the Banquet Hall of Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N Montana Ave.

FARIBAULT -- Helen (Mrs. Ambrose) LaCroix, age 97, of Faribault, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 10:30 a.m. from the Divine Mercy Catholic Church at Sacred Heart, with Fr. Michael Izen, associate pastor, officiating. Interment will be at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Faribault. Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday for one hour prior to the services at the church. The parish prayers will be held on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Helen Leona Schmitz was born on March 8, 1908, in Forest Township, Rice County to William and Agnes (Brown) Schmitz. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Faribault where she was baptized and confirmed. She graduated from Bethlehem Academy in Faribault in 1926. On June 9, 1931, she married Ambrose LaCroix at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1984. They farmed with Ambrose's brother, Walter, until 1939 when they moved to their own farm in Walcott Township, Rice County. Helen raised a large flock of chickens and became known as The Egg Lady. People from across southern Rice County and Faribault came to the farm for Helen's eggs. It was an enterprise that brought her many lifelong friends. She was a great cook and a wonderful baker. Her four grandchildren always had the choice of at least a dozen varieties of cookies from her freezer. She is survived by her son, Ronald (and Mary) LaCroix of Faribault; four grandchildren, Cheryl LaCroix of Northfield, Terry (and Michelle) LaCroix, Lori Hatfield and Kris (and Tim) Smith, all of Faribault; by eight great-grandchildren; by two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ed (and Sue) Schmitz of Faribault; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Alex and Justin Schmitz; and five sisters, Florence Becker, Laura Thibodeau, Regina Dunleavy, Olive Skluzacek and Ruth Gillen.¹

Phillip Anthony Schmitz married Sharon Lynn Taupe on 26 June 1970 at King Co., Washington.² Phillip Anthony Schmitz and Sharon Lynn Taupe were divorced on 5 February 1975 at Polson, Lake Co., Montana. Phillip Anthony Schmitz married Joyce Elaine Corbett on 22 February 1982 at Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co., Idaho.² Phillip Anthony Schmitz and Joyce Elaine Corbett were divorced on 17 September 1986 at Lake Co., Montana. Phillip Anthony Schmitz married Kathy Bright circa 1988. Phil Schmiz

Phil A. Schmitz, 58, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008 at home in Ronan.

He was born June 6, 1949, in Polson, to Phillip and Florence Boice Schmitz.

Phil grew up on the family farm and graduated from Ronan schools and attended Carroll College in Helena for 2 years.

Phil married Sharon Taupe in 1970, and they had three children together, Jason, Robbie and Melony.

He served in the Army 1970-71 and is a Vietnam veteran. Upon getting out of the Army, he returned to Ronan with his family and went to work for his father in the construction business.

Phil married Joyce Corbett, and together they had two daughters, Jolene and Megan.

Phil was very social and loved being with people, hunting, fishing and skiing, enjoying the outdoors or a get-together. Dearest to his heart were his family, friends and fellow veterans and veteran activities.
Building, carpentry and construction were in his blood, inherited from his father, and his meticulous approach has been reflected throughout his career. In more recent years, Phil volunteered and helped his friends and family with various carpentry projects.

Phil was preceded in death by his son, Robbie; his granddaughter Ashley; his former wife Kathy Bright; and his parents Phillip and Florence Schmitz.

He is survived by his son Phillip Jason of Virginia; daughters, Melony of Czech Republic, Jolene of Massachusetts and Megan of Kalispell; sisters Cherryl Taylor (Jim) of Helena, Dee Marie of Manchester, Wash., Barb Schmidt (Jim Tyson) of Helena and Sheila Conner of Ronan; grandchildren Tara and Aaron of North Carolina; and several nephews, nieces and grandnephews. He was loved and supported by his long-time companion DeeAnn DesJarlais and will be missed greatly.

The church service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Sacred Heart Parish, Ronan. Military honors rendered at gravesite, in the Ronan cemetery.

He was born May 9, 1915. at Medicine Lake, to Mike and Anna Schmitz.
He married Florence Boice of Polson on June 6, 1945 in Ronan. They have lived in the North Crow area for 40 years.
He owned and operated Lake County Builders until it was destroyed by fire. He then did private contracting and building until his retirement.
He was active in Grange, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife, Florence, of Ronan; four daughters, Cherryl Taylor, Helena, Dolores Gibson of Port Orchard, Wash, Barbara Schmidt, Bozeman, and Shiela Connors, Ronan; one son, Philip Schmitz, of Ronan; three brothers. Albert Schmitz, Ronan. George Schmitz, Missoula, and Joe Schmitz, Medicine Lake; three sisters, Elizabeth Mueller of Williston, N.D., Marian Buell, Havre, and Anna Rose Schmitz, San Francisco; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lillian Berringer; and a grandson, Robbie Schmitz.
Rosary will be recited at Sacred Heart Church Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. William Waggenor as celebrant. Cremation has taken place. Interment of ashes will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Ronan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Ronan Senior Citizens Center or Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ronan.

Sheila Schmitz Conner was born May 24, 1953 to Phillip and Florence Schmitz and joined siblings Cherryl, Dee, Phil (Butch) & Barb. She attended schools at Villa Ursula in St. Ignatius & Ronan graduating from Ronan High in 1971. Sheila continued her education at Montana State University in Bozeman and Eastern in Billings, graduating from Eastern Montana University with a degree in special education. She loved working with children with learning challenges, since she had dyslexia and Mrs. Mercedes LeDesky helped her overcome it in the 1st grade. Sheila spent the majority of her career in Ronan and Pablo Elementary Schools working with preschool, pre-first, resource room & multiple challenged classrooms. She retired from teaching in 2013 but loved seeing her kids around town and at events.

After Sheila retired, she volunteered at Ronan Bread Basket where she helped sort, collect & distribute food and also served on the Board of Directors. She also volunteered as a driver (Driving Miss Daisy) for Lake County Council on Aging. She also volunteered for the Cancer Support Group a number of years at both St. Luke and St. Joseph hospitals.

Sheila loved to travel and traveled with People to People International Travel Program as director with groups of Student Ambassadors to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Africa, & Greece. She said, “In all of my travels, I want to go back to South Africa to work with the multiple challenged people. They are so happy, so poor and make so much beauty from so little.” Other favorites were Nice France & Portugal.

Sheila married Greg Conner in 1984 at Flathead Lake and enjoyed riding motorcycles and doing photography with him. She laughed and called herself a “Harley Momma Teacher” and loved spending time with Greg on his Harley with his biker friends and their mommas.

Sheila left us January 18, 2021 in the early morning after several years of serious health problems. She loved life and had a strong desire to live many more years and became a Warrior Woman surprising many Doctors by outliving her estimated lifetime.

Sheila joins her parents, Phillip and Florence (Boice) Schmitz, brother Phil Schmitz, sister Barbara (Schmitz) Schmidt, nephews Robbie Schmitz & Riley Gibson, great niece, Ashley Schmitz, great nephew Julian Costantino & numerous aunts & uncles.

She is survived by sisters Cherryl (Schmitz) Taylor (Jim), Helena MT, Dee (Schmitz) Marie, Port Orchard WA, nephews: Jason Schmitz (Jessica) Ferrum VA, Trevor Taylor (Marli) Helena MT, Dewey Gibson, Gig Harbor WA, nieces, Melony Schmitz Candida Costantino (Armando) Italy, Jolene Schmitz, Ronan, MT, Megan (Schmitz) Kramer (Garrett) Kalispell MT, Mistelle Taylor, Seattle WA, Allison (Taylor) Brown (Brad) Helena MT & Skylure (Schmidt) Underhill (Brian) Spokane WA and 7 great nephews and nieces.

Palms and pedestal baskets of white, yellow and bronze chrysanthemums banked the altar in the candlelighted interior of Christ church Friday evening of the marriage of Miss Joanne K. Schneider of Red Wing, and Howard C. Wurst of Lake City. The bride is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. H.C. Schneider, 474 Fifteenth street, and Mr. Wurst's parents, Mr. And Mrs. C.L. Wurst reside at Lake City.
The double ring vows were spoken at 8 o'clock before the Rev. Monroe Bailie and Dorr Thomas played they background organ music. Members of the Kappa Delta sorority sang from the chapel preceding the nuptial service and Margueritte LaRock of Rochester, a cousin of the groom, was the soloist. Entering though an aisle defined with lighted tapers and bitter sweet, the bride, was gowned in white Chantilly lace over satin. The fitted bodice was detailed with an off-the-shoulder neckline inset with net and the full skirt ended in a semi-train. Her short veil fell from a lace bonnet and she carried white button 'mums, Stephanotis and ivy. Her only jewelry was a double strand pearl necklace, a gift from the groom.
Mrs. Janet Schneider of Minneapolis, attended her sister as maiden of honor and the bridesmaid was Miss Nancy Kunau also of Minneapolis. Gail Schneider, sister of the bride, was the junior attendant. They chose ballerina length gowns of brown shadow plaid silk organza accented with velvet jackets. Completing their costumes were brown velvet crowns and they carried yellow button 'mums with ivy.
For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Schneider was attired in a brown crepe flock trimmed with white. Her accessories were brown and white and salmon colored tea roses formed her corsage. Mrs. Wurst, mother of the groom, in a plum colored dress, chose matching accessories and a shoulder corsage of Johanna Hill roses. The best man was Robert Wurst of Lake City, and Allen Anderson, Gilbert Wurst and William Schneider, brother of the bride, ushered.
About 150 guests attended the wedding reception held in the parish house after the ceremony. Yellow and white 'mums and ivy and lighted tapers graced the serving tables. Mrs. Herbert McLaird of LaCresent, Minn., an aunt of the bride, served the wedding cake while Mrs. Chester Krauss of Lake City and Mrs. Arthur Dickson of St. Paul, poured. Miss Mary Anne Dahl of Red Wing, was at the guest book and the gifts were attended by Mrs. Robert Wurst. Other assistants were Misses Marlene Reuben and Alyce Katzenmeyer, sorority sisters of the bride, and Mrs. Eugene Zillgitt of Eau Claire, Wis.
As the newlyweds left of a short wedding trip to northern Wisconsin, the new Mrs. Wurst wore a brown and cinnamon herringbone suit with brown accessories and a white orchid corsage. They will make their home at 1629 Sixth St. S.E. in Minneapolis.
The bride is a senior in education at the University of Minnesota and her husband is a junior student there studying technical agriculture. He is a veteran of World War II and the Korean campaign. Guests included Kappa Delta sorority sisters of the bride and also members of the groom's fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. Others attended from La Crosse, LaCrescent, Rochester, Plainview, Lake City, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Decorah, Ia., Spring Valley, Wis., Pine Island, Eyota, Eau Claire and Nebraska.

     John Herman Schneider was born on 24 June 1905 at Mankato, Blue Earth Co., Minnesota.¹ He married Ardath Ione Young, daughter of William Reuben Young and Eva Della Bothell, on 18 June 1927. John Herman Schneider died on 14 November 1979 at Anacortes, Skagit Co., Washington, at age 74.¹ He was buried at Grand View Cemetery, Anacortes, Skagit Co., Washington.¹
