Polson Man Killed In U.S. 93 Mishap
POLSON - Lee R. Harrod, 45, Poison, died instantly Sunday morning and his wife, Donna, 41, was seriously injured in a one-car accident two-and-a-half miles south of Polson on U.S. 93, a Montana highway patrolman said.
Mrs. Harrod was driving the northbound vehicle at 3:10 a.m. when she lost control of the car while attempting to pass another vehicle, according to the investigating officer.
The Harrod car went off the left side of the highway, skidded and rolled for more than 600 feet. Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle and were found about 300 feet apart, with the wreckage between them.
Officials said Harrod died from a broken neck and head injuries. The body was taken to the Mosley Funeral Home in Polson.
Mrs. Harrod was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Polson and later transferred to the Kalispell Health Center for treatment of a broken leg, back injuries and severe abrasions.
The Harrods reportedly had attended the wedding of their son Saturday evening. They had driven to Ronan to eat and were returning to Polson when the mishap occurred. The car they were attempting to pass contained members of the wedding party, also returning from Ronan. It was the third highway fatality in Lake County this year.

In 1951 he moved with his family to California, where he operated a marina until returning to Polson in 1964. Harrod worked as a mechanic for a number of years in the Polson area and recently owned and operated a tune-up and repair shop in Polson. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brad and Jim; two daughters, Debbie and Mrs. Kathy Smith, all of Polson; his mother, Mrs. George Harrod, and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Hecht, both of San Diego; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery under the direction of the Mosley Funeral Home.

Fortunately he did not fall under the machine but was thrown to one side."
