Charles Brown, now engaged in the coal, wood, coke and general transfer business, was born in Red Wing, July 12, 1868, son of Robert and Martha (McGarvey) Brown, natives of Ireland, who came to America at the ages of two and nine years, respectively. They spent their childhood in Canada and landed in Red Wing in 1856. The father at once purchased a farm in the township of Featherstone and continued farming until his death. For some time he was with Hamline University and also kept a boarding hall for the students of that institution. Robert Brown died in November, 1904, and his widow, who still owns the old homestead, now resides in Seattle, Wash., with her daughter, having reached the ripe old age of seventy-two years.

Charles received his education in the public schools and finished at the Red Wing Seminary. Upon completing his studies, he started life for himself as a clerk in the grocery store of Peter Kempe, at Red Wing. After three years he engaged in his present business in 1893, in which line he has since successfully continued. Mr. Brown was married December 26, 1894, to Lena M. Towle, of Red Wing, daughter of D. H. Towle, a farmer of Featherstone township in this county. Mrs. Brown's mother is now deceased and her father, who has remarried, is now living a retired life in Minneapolis, having sold his farm in Featherstone. To Mr. and Mrs. Brown have been born six children: Marian, born in 1895; Florence I., born January 13, 1897; Charles D., born January 24, 1898; Robert D., born August 21, 1901; Kenneth, born April 15, 1903, and Edward, born in September, 1908.

Mr. Brown is a Republican in politics and belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church. He affiliates with the Masons, the United Workmen and the Modern Woodmen. He has never sought public office. It is a matter worthy of somewhat extended note that Mr. Brown was chairman of the parade committee for the now famous celebration held in Red Wing, July 3, 4 and 5, 1909. With that energy that has characterized all his efforts, Mr. Brown set at work making the plans, and not only persuaded the leading business interests of Red Wing to participate in the parade, but also made a notable showing from his own stables. Seldom in any city in Minnesota has there been seen so fine a display of horses and vehicles as Mr. Brown had in the parade that day. Mr. Brown takes a personal as well as a business interest in his horses, being a lover of high-grade animals, and his stables contain some fine specimens of horse flesh. Charles Brown died on 7 July 1946 at Goodhue Co., Minnesota, at age 77.¹ He was buried at Burnside Cemetery, Red Wing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota.¹

     Charles Brown was born circa 1868 at Canada. He married Lena Luella Fellows, daughter of Adin Fellows and Viola Pettit, on 21 August 1948 at Goodells, St. Clair Co., Michigan.¹ Charles Brown and Lena Luella Fellows were divorced on 23 April 1949 at St. Clair Co., Michigan.

     Charles Wesley Brown was born on 29 November 1892 at Ontonagon, Ontonagon Co., Michigan. He was the son of William Alvah Brown and Adella Della Fellows. Charles Wesley Brown died on 19 December 1965 at Caro, Tuscola Co., Michigan, at age 73.¹ He was buried at Fremont Township Cemetery, Mayville, Tuscola Co., Michigan.¹

Earl Marion Brown married Alma Clarissa Avenall on 16 September 1918 at Michigan. Earl Marion Brown died in July 1970 at Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan, at age 74.

     Elvira Brown was born on 23 June 1810 at New York.¹ She married Calvin Reed Jr., son of Calvin Reed and Olivia Elizabeth Warner.¹ Elvira Brown died on 17 December 1862 at Wilbur, Douglas Co., Oregon, at age 52.¹

     Frank Charles Brown Jr. was born on 1 December 1939 at Donnelly, Stevens Co., Minnesota.¹ He was the son of Frank Roy Brown and Elma Margaret Perkins. Frank Charles Brown Jr. married Wilma Jean Oakes on 24 July 1959 at Faith Lutheran Church, Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kansas. Frank Charles Brown Jr. died on 18 August 2018 at Newton, Harvey Co., Kansas, at age 78.¹ He was buried at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kansas.¹

     Frank Roy Brown was born on 6 August 1915 at Morris, Stevens Co., Minnesota.¹ He married Elma Margaret Perkins, daughter of Charles Llewellyn Perkins and Hattie Rosalie Retzlaff, in 1939. Frank Roy Brown died on 28 March 1985 at Fargo, Cass Co., North Dakota, at age 69.¹ He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, Cass Co., North Dakota.¹

     Hannah Brown was born on 20 March 1721 at Rye, Westchester Co., New York.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Samuel Brown and Hannah Rundle.³ Hannah Brown married Caleb Purdy, son of Samuel Purdy and Glorianna Penelope Strang, on 11 December 1739.^4,3 Hannah Brown died on 11 June 1805 at Rye, Westchester Co., New York, at age 84.^1,2,3 Her Ancestral File Number is RKMP-WG.
