JOHN M. SHIMP. The Shimp family is one of the oldest in St. Joseph county, and have been noted from the beginning of their identification with its interests for the sterling traits that are so characteristic of the subject of this review, constituting him a fitting representative of the name.
He is one of Harris township's most honored citizens and farmers, and is the son of Jacob and Hannah (Graham) Shimp. He was born on the 18th of January, 1848, and this county has always been his home and agriculture his chosen vocation. He received his education in the public schools of Olive township, and remained with his parents until twenty-two years of age.
On the 16th of March, 1869, he was united in marriage to Sarah J. Longley, at the residence of her parents. Andrew and Mary (Rupel) Longley, of Greene township, St. Joseph county, and they have become the parents of three children: Gertrude, who died when only two months old; Delbert, an agriculturist of Harris township; and Andrew L., a resident of Mishawaka.
In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Shimp came to his present farm, known as the Burr Oaks, and this is one of the valuable farming properties of the township. He is a member of the St. Joseph County Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company, which has three million dollars worth of insurance in this county, and for eight years he served as its director, while during the past three years he has been its President. He has been a life-long Democrat in his political affiliations, and has held many positions of honor and trust. For nine years he served as assessor, and for two terms of two years each, was township trustee, and sixteen years ago was appointed jury commissioner of St. Joseph county by the circuit court judge, he having been the incumbent of this important office ever since. Two years ago he was the Democratic candidate for the office of county commissioner, and while Roosevelt carried the county by over five thousand, Mr. Shimp ran about twenty-three hundred votes ahead of the national ticket. In his fraternal relations he is a member of the Masonic order, No. 45, of South Bend, and in that city he also has membership relations with the St. Joseph Valley Grange. His sterling worth commands the respect and confidence of all, and he is one of the valued citizens of his native county of St. Joseph. He lived in February 1915 at South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.4 HARN Family Bible spelled last name as "SHRIMP". History of St Joseph Co., spelled last name as "SHIMP".

William Denton Wallace Shipley was born on 3 August 1853 at Linganore District, Frederick Co., Maryland.2,3 He was the son of Denton Robert Shipley and Ellen Gill Sellman. William Denton Wallace Shipley married Annie L. Harn, daughter of Abner Harn and Sarah Margaret Eury, in March 1893 at Frederick, Frederick Co., Maryland. William Denton Wallace Shipley died on 15 June 1938 at Frederick, Frederick Co., Maryland, at age 84.3 He was buried at Linganore Cemetery, Unionville, Frederick Co., Maryland.3
Following from the book HISTORY OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND, by T.J.C. Williams, reprint of the 1910 edition, Published in 1967 by Regional Publishing Company, page 1292-1293.
Wallace D.W. Shipley, of Linganore District, Frederick County, Md., a descendant of one of the old families of Frederick County, son of Denton R. and Ellen G. (Sellman) Shipley, was born on the farm which he now owns in Linganore District, August 3, 1853.
The Shipley family is of English descent. Three brothers of that name, emigrants, from England, landed at Elk Ridge, Md., where they erected a monument to commemorate the event. Wallace D. Shipley's great grandfather settled near Sykesville, Md., where he owned large tracts of land.
Denton Shipley, grandfather of Wallace D. Shipley, was born on his father's farm near Sykesville, Md. He was a first lieutenant in the War of 1812, and on one occasion, while bearing dispatches to General Ringgold, was surrounded by dragoons. His capture seemed certain, but his gallant horse cleared a wide ditch, and carried his master beyond pursuit. Denton Shipley owned 450 acres of land near Westminster, Md., where he lived and died, spending his life in clearing and improving his land. Denton Shipley was married to Hannah Hipsley. Their children are: 1, Elias, 2, Silas; 3, Susan (Mrs. Kernan Sprinkle) removed to Omaha, Neb; 4, Denton R.
Mr. Shipley's father, Denton Robert Shipley, was born in 1822, on the Shipley homestead near Sykesville, Carroll County, Md. Denton R. Shipley was married to Ellen G., daughter of Ellen G., daughter of Joshua and Miranda Sellman, of Carroll County, Md. Their children are: 1, Oscar, of Frederick County, Md; 2, Elinore, widow of Theodore Evans, of Baltimore, Md; 3, Wallace D.W.
Wallace D.W. Shipley began his education, at the age of six, in the Paradise public schools, and completed his studies in a private school under William R. Curry. He began work on his father's farm and has devoted all his energies to the cultivation of the soil. He is an intelligent, progressive farmer, and has met with well-deserved success. In 1896, Mr. Shipley purchased his present home, a fertile farm of 200 acres, which rewards his care by heavy crops of good quality. He has erected most of the buildings on the place; the house, however, was built in 1813. Mr. Shipley is a staunch Democrat, interested in all that concerns the well-being of the community, and is highly esteemed in the county.
Wallace D.W. Shipley, was married, in March, 1893, to Annie L., daughter of Abner and Margaret (Eury) Harn, of Linganore District, Frederick County. They have one child, Marie G., born December 21, 1893. Mr. Shipley attends the Methodist Episcopal Church in Linganore.
Mrs. Shipley was born near Unionville, Linganore District, Frederick County, January 28, 1865, and received her education in the old Friendship school. The children of Abner and Margaret (Eury) Harn are: 1, Samuel, of Unionville, Md., married Nannie Nicodemus; 2, Alice (Mrs. Jason Hood), of Carroll County, Md; 3, Laura (Mrs. Clegget Dorsey), of Frederick County; 4, Kenley, a clerk in a bank, married Grace Burton, removed to Indiana; 5, Annie L., (Mrs. Wallace D.W. Shipley.
