Beloved friend, colleague, instructor, mentor, and dedicated family man, Dr. Arthur E. Bukowski died February 18, 2016 in Albuquerque, NM after a brief and unexpected illness. He was 71.

Arthur Eugene Bukowski was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania on November 10th, 1944. His father, Joe, was a coal miner and his mother, Ellen, was a homemaker; Art was the fifth of their six children. When the mines shut down, the family moved to Elyria, Ohio. Art graduated from Elyria High School in 1962 and received a full scholarship to Ohio University, becoming the first of his family to attend college. There is also where he met and married his wife, Marcia, in 1965. Art earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Math, while also teaching math and physics. He was then awarded a National Science Foundation scholarship for his Ph.D, which he earned at the University of New Mexico in 1972. He immediately took an opportunity to teach in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he was part of developing the first English-speaking university in the country. With Saudi as their base, Art and Marcia (with children Kelly and Stephen) traveled all over the Middle East. From Istanbul to New Delhi, they drove their yellow VW campervan, having great adventures (and misadventures) and learning the finer points of remaining sane while traveling with small children. They also made many lifelong friends along the way.

Rising to a challenge from his father-in-law, Art grew his iconic mustache in 1972. It became a trademark he wore for the rest of his life, even when he was mistakenly accused of encouraging the Hipster movement. (Art was anything BUT high-falutin’.) When he stopped styling it in the late 90's, the Clubman Wax Company saw a 50% drop in its revenue. All across the Middle East, he was known as Abu Shinab ("Father Mustache"), and was the envy of countless Arab men. While he enjoyed the attention, he stopped short of letting them kiss it for luck.
Deciding they'd like to try the other end of the climate spectrum, the family moved to Alaska in 1976. Art took a position at the University of Alaska in Anchorage (UAA), and immediately became the vice-president of the AFT Teacher's Union. This put him on the picket lines one month after they arrived, striking for a fair contract. Although this is usually not the way to make a good first impression with a new employer, UAA already knew they had struck gold when they hired Art. He taught at UAA for 22 years, 14 of which he also served as Chair of the math department. His purview as Chair stretched from Palmer to Kodiak, and he was much appreciated for his fairness and compassion. In the 1985-86 academic year Art took a sabbatical to Cairo, where he taught at the Egyptian Air Force Academy, and the family eventually thawed out. Art retired as Professor Emeritus from UAA in 1998. Lest he be mistaken for a man of "all brain, no brawn”, Art also held a General Contractor's license. He built two homes in Anchorage for his family, was involved in the construction of several others, and was the go-to guy if one needed to move a piano.
During their time in Anchorage, Art and Marcia fostered innumerable children, from newborns to teens, and were active members of the Alaska Foster Parent Association. Their involvement positively impacted not just the children in their care, but also had far-reaching effects for all of Alaska's foster children. In 1980 they successfully challenged the state to lift restrictions that prevented foster parents from adopting their foster children. An untold number of foster children across the state got (and continue to get) permanent, loving homes due to their efforts. Over the years, Art and Marcia themselves adopted four of their own foster children, resulting in the family joke “Thank God I’m not from YOUR gene pool!”. In 1982, the Bukowskis were chosen for the first Nerland's Family of the Year award. In 1983, Art and Marcia were awarded "Foster Parents of the Year" from their peers. To his children, Art was Father of the Century.
After his retirement from Alaska, Art spent a year teaching at Dine' College on the Navajo reservation in Tsaile, Arizona. He returned to UNM for a year then transferred to the New Mexico Institute of Mining at Technology in Socorro in 2000. Art rebuilt a century-old, condemned adobe house on Bernard Street, chosen mainly for the windmill on the property (which didn't work, but Marcia loved.) And then he built some sheds. And then a guest house. At that point, he reluctantly admitted that his back had had enough, and it was time to let others do the heavy lifting. Unable to lose the travel bug, however, Art and Marcia moved to Kuwait for two years, starting in 2003. Art helped develop the math department at the brand new Gulf University of Science and Technology, the first international center of higher learning in the country. Rumor had it that he finally let one or two men kiss his mustache, but he would neither confirm nor deny this. He returned to "Tech" in 2005, where he taught until his untimely passing.

Wherever Art taught, he had a following. His students appreciated his gentle style, sense of humor, and his genuine concern that they understood the material. But, for many, he became much more than just their professor. Art was part of his students’ weddings, baptisms, and political campaigns. He loaned them money and vehicles and, on at least one occasion, bailed them out of jail. He wrote over a thousand letters of recommendations for jobs, graduate schools, and scholarships. Art was a supportive colleague, too. He was always ready to assist however he could, from covering classes when someone was out sick to deftly navigating academic bureaucracy and politics. Professional ethics prevented him from disclosing if he bailed any of his coworkers out a jail, but we suspect there were at least a few.
Art was a voracious reader, and was especially fond of science fiction. In his younger days, he played tennis and softball and looked very studly doing so. He loved a good joke, especially if it was off-color, and his laugh could fill an auditorium. He was a die-hard, long-suffering fan of the Cleveland Browns. He could recite Green Eggs and Ham from memory, having read it hundreds of times to scores of children in their jammies.

As much as Art loved his career and his students, his family always came first. In his children and grandchildren, he instilled resiliency, compassion, generosity, and sense of adventure. No matter where their lives took them, they always knew they had a home to return to. He never stopped wooing Marcia, and did everything he could to make her dreams come true. As far as he was concerned, she hung the sun, moon and stars. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last fall, but their love is timeless.
It is no exaggeration to say that Art made the world a better place. Many of his former students have said they would not have graduated or be where they are today were it not for his support. He gave a safe haven to abused children. He was an unofficial diplomat all over this planet. He stuck up for the little guy because he knew we are all in this together. He made us better people just for knowing him and, through us, the ripple effect of Art’s compassion reaches people that will never know his name. To the very end, he was a giver. Because he was an organ donor, his eyes - which had seen so much - now give the gift of sight to others.
Art is survived by wife Marcia, his 103-year-old mother Ellen, his sister Barbara Collins, his brothers Joe (and Barbara) Bukowski of South Carolina, James Bukowski of Florida, John Bukowski of Colorado; two special sisters-in-law (Nicki Fritz of Colorado and Sharon Bukowski of Elyria, OH), his six children: Kelly Bukowski of Belen, NM, Donde Bukowski of Portland OR, Stephen (and Lara) Bukowski and Lacey (and David) Asher of Las Cruces NM, Devon (and Angie) Bukowski, and Lea (and Josh) Sorensen of Kalispell, MT; and 16 grandchildren: Jacob, Carson, Paul, Everett, Breana, Ryker, Erik, Joe, Tyler, Jessica, Miles, Hanah, Elaine, Christine, Sara, and Lily.
A scholarship in Art's name is being established at New Mexico Tech. A celebration of his life will be held on April 16, 2016 in Socorro, NM. Time and place will be announced shortly on his Facebook page.

Remembering Dr. Arthur Bukowski Alum Who Taught Around the World
March 24, 2016

Ohio University alum Dr. Arthur E. Bukowski ’66, ’68M died Feb. 18 in Albuquerque, NM, after a brief
illness, according to the Chronicle Telegram.
He earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences and an M.S. in Mathematics from the College of Arts & Sciences at
Ohio University.
Arthur Eugene Bukowski was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania on November 10, 1944. His
father, Joe, was a coal miner and his mother, Ellen, was a homemaker; Art was the fifth of their
six children. After the mines shut down, the family moved to Elyria.
Art graduated from Elyria High School in 1962 and received a full scholarship to Ohio
University, becoming the first of his family to attend college. There is also where he met and
married his wife, Marcia, in September 1965. Art earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Math,
while also teaching math and physics. He was then awarded a National Science Foundation
scholarship for his Ph.D, which he earned at the University of New Mexico in 1972.
As his wife, Marcia had a love of travel which she instilled in Art, they chose to work and travel
overseas, beginning with a job in Saudi Arabia in 1972. After four years of teaching math at the
University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dharahan, Saudi Arabia and traveling around the world
twice, with stops in over 30 countries, including Turkey, Iraq, Iran, India, Thailand, the
Philippines and Egypt.
In 1976, Art chose yet another adventure and took a job in Anchorage, Alaska at the Community
College and at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. After teaching for 22 years, with a
sabbatical in Cairo Egypt at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Art retired to Socorro in 1998.
After settling down in Socorro, Art got a job at Dine’ College on the Navajo Reservation in the 4
corners area in 1998. The following fall term he was teaching at UNM, driving twice a week to
Albuquerque from Socorro. In 2000, he transferred from UNM to NM Tech and was in the
middle of his 15th year of teaching at Tech at the time of his death. During those 15 years, he
took a sabbatical to assist in the development of the math department at the new Gulf University
of Science and Technology in Kuwait, from 2003 to 2005.

Arthur E. BukowskiBeloved friend, colleague, instructor, mentor and dedicated family man, Dr. Arthur E. Bukowski died on Feb. 18, 2016, in Albuquerque, N.M., after a brief and unexpected illness. He was 71. Art began teaching math at UAA in 1976, and was known for his compassion, humor and iconic mustache. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1998, and taught at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro since 2000. He also taught in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait and Arizona. He made many lifelong friends all over the world. Art and his wife, Marcia, were foster parents to countless children in Anchorage, Alaska. In 1980, they successfully challenged the state to allow foster parents to adopt the children in their care. An untold number of foster children across the state got permanent, loving homes due to their efforts. Over the years, Art and Marcia themselves adopted four of their own foster children. As much as Art loved his career and his students, his family always came first. In his six children and 16 grandchildren, he instilled resiliency, compassion, generosity and sense of adventure. He made us better people just for knowing him and, through us, the ripple effect of Art's compassion reaches people that will never know his name. To the very end, he was a giver. As an organ donor, his eyes - which had seen so much - now give the gift of sight to others. A scholarship in Art's name is being established at New Mexico Tech. A celebration of his life will be held on April 16, 2016, in Socorro, N.M. Time and place will be announced shortly on his Facebook page.
