MELVIN WALKER Obituary
Smith Funeral Home LTD and Crematory

Mel Walker, age 86, was born on March 12, 1924 to parents Anna and Frances Walker in Gem, Idaho. Mel entered into rest in Spokane, WA on July 4, 2010. When he was one year old, his family moved to the Prosser area. He went to school in Prosser, graduating with the class of 1943. He moved to Sunnyside, WA for a short period of time and returned to Prosser in 1949 to become a Prosser patrolman for Chief Cliff Rolf. His friend, Sam Eaton (who was on the force at the time), told him about the position and the rest is history.

Mel worked for the Van Belle family on their dairy until his return to Prosser. He delivered milk along with a variety of other duties during this time. He maintained a life-long friendship with the entire Van Belle family.

Mel did many things during his life and was proud of them all. He was a Prosser policeman from 1949 until 1989 when he retired. During these years, he 'walked the beat' in the evening and could be seen walking down the street checking to make sure all the store doors were locked. He didn't check the doors at night after he became chief, but one could see him walking the main streets in downtown Prosser during the day time. Mel became Chief of Police when Chief Rolf retired and remained chief for twenty seven years. Not only was he respected by his peers throughout the State of WA, but the local youth had a deep respect for him. He was known to give them a break as he didn't want youth pranks to be part of their adult life. While in high school, Mel started driving school bus. At that time, the school buses were privately owned and he worked for one of the owners. He drove a school bus for about 53 years, only retiring when a shoulder injury forced him to. Mel was always proud to say he didn't have problems with any of 'his kids' while driving bus. Of course, who's going to make trouble when you have a policeman driving your bus. He was actually very good with the kids and when he spoke, they listened. He drove in the mornings for many years as his job as a policeman had him working there in the afternoons. He loved driving the buses to out-oftown sporting activities - he was going anyway, so why not drive the bus there.

Mel was a Prosser sports fan and that is putting it mildly. He became a Prosser sports fan when he was in grade school. He loved telling you how he would go watch the high school teams practice after school. He always missed the bus and would have to walk home. The family lived in North Prosser for awhile, so the walk wasn't too bad. When the family moved about five miles west of town, it was a little further to walk, but sports were too important to him, so he walked this also. He was instrumental in the start up of the Prosser Grid Kids program as well as a baseball coach for the 'Police Pals' pee wee baseball team. He followed the Prosser football team forever. Mel actually had his own reserved seat at home games. If you went to the games, you knew you didn't sit in Mel Walker's seat. You actually didn't have a chance to sit there because as soon as the stadium opened (about 4:00 p.m. or earlier) he would take his blankets and tape them to his seating area. If Prosser made it to any team playoff, Mel would be there, especially football, boys and girls basketball and girls volleyball. He was honored last fall at the Prosser High football homecoming game. Mel and his wife Mary Jane were grand marshall's and had the honor of crowning the royalty. This was very thrilling for him.

Mel was also an enthusiastic fisherman. For twenty years he went to Klink's Resort on Williams Lake near Cheney the Monday following opening day. They would spend the week fishing, eating and fishing some more. It was up at dawn to be on the lake, back for breakfast and if they hadn't caught their limit, back on the lake some more. He did this with his wife, son, son-in-law, brother and whoever else he could get there. It was a week he looked forward to every year. If you were catching more fish than him, eventually (within minutes) you might find him sitting beside you and kind of taking over your spot. That always made for a few laughs.

Mel and Mary Jane travelled to Alaska in 2001 with five couples with motor homes. He had wanted to go fishing in Alaska forever, so the long trek was made. People looked at him funny when the caravan would stop, as Mel bought a small freezer and had it rigged up in the back of his pickup truck. He said this was for all the fish he caught and he was going to go home with it full. His brother had to buy another small freezer for fish as Mel said there wouldn't be enough room in his freezer after he caught all his fish. Alas, his freezer had lots of Halibut, but no salmon. He did snag a large salmon while on the river, but when it was almost in, the line snapped and his hopes of the big one was gone. It was a very memorable trip with lots of laughs and fun. All the fishermen on the trip had to buy a pair of high fishing boots. Mel bought his a size too big, thank heavens because when he put them on, they were both for the same foot. You had to be there to see him walking with two left feet.

Mel was also a farmer. He and his wife Esther, bought a small farm outside the city limits on Bennett Ave. about 1950 where they raised hay, asparagus, cherries, mint and their four children. The family also had lots of animals making sure the children always had a horse to ride and cows to milk (the boy job). He taught his children the value of hard work, but also the value of enjoying life and having fun.

Saturday nights were also reserved for dancing (after the basketball games of course). For many years it was Saturday's at the dance, until the late 1970's when he had more time and he would go dancing, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. If music was available on other nights, he would go if time allowed. He was a good dancer and all the ladies enjoyed dancing with him. His favorite dancing song was 'Kansas City' and he might request it several times during the evening.

Mel is survived by his loving wife of twenty three years, Mary Jane. His children, Beverly (Wheeler) Scheel (Tom), Pasco; Leonard, Prosser, Judy Gilbert, Pasco; Barbara Walker, Richland; Cathy Marshall (Brian), Sequim; Bill Whitaker, Salt Lake City, UT; Teri Martin (Cary), Prosser; Cindy Whitaker, Prosser; and Wendi Howell (John), NC. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Opal McCulley, Prosser; brothers Earl (Jean), Prosser; Howard (Mia), Toppenish; and sisters Ethel Sizemore, Sacramento, CA and Lavina Weist (Abe), Kanasas City, MO. Sisters-in-laws Bonnie Petty (Paul), Couer d'Alene, ID; Wanda Roth, Union Gap; Margie Burke (Bud), Yuma, AZ; Helen Boozer, Pasco; 24 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. He is deceased by his parents, Anna and Frank Walker, sisters, Eilene Martin, Blanche Wolf, Lucille Hannaman, Leona Kemp and baby Grace Walker, brother Lloyd Walker, brother-in-law Bob McCulley, son Mark Whitaker, grandchildren Mark Osborn and Denise Osborn and his son-in-law Burt Gilbert.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate to the charity of your choice.

Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside is in charge of arrangements. You may visit their website at www.funeralhomesmith.com for information and to sign the online guest book for Mel. Services will be held on Saturday July 10, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints on Highland Drive in Prosser with internment in the East Prosser Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Davita Dialysis Center in Sunnyside for their dedicated service to Mel for the past four years. We would also like to thank the Prosser Hospital Emergency staff, the staff at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane for taking such good car
