     Florentine Varos was born on 23 February 1949 at Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado. She was the daughter of Joseph Ralph Varos and Juliet Mary Dupont. Florentine Varos died on 8 March 2011 at Hammond, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, at age 62. She was buried at Restlawn Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, Avondale, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.¹

     Jane Varos was born circa 1926 at New Mexico. She was the daughter of Joseph M. Varos and Mary Struck. Jane Varos married Joseph Lucero.

     Joseph M. Varos was born on 22 February 1896 at Taos, Taos Co., New Mexico.¹ He married Mary Struck, daughter of George Struck and Juanita Teresa Tafoya, in 1918. Joseph M. Varos died on 28 August 1970 at Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, at age 74.¹ He was buried at Mountain View Memorial Park, Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado.¹

     Joseph Ralph Varos was born on 21 September 1919 at Wheatland, Platte Co., Wyoming. He was the son of Joseph M. Varos and Mary Struck. Joseph Ralph Varos married Juliet Mary Dupont on 8 September 1946 at Rock Springs, Sweetwater Co., Wyoming. Joseph Ralph Varos died on 21 August 1968 at age 48. He was buried at Mountain View Memorial Park, Boulder, Colorado.

     Anna Maria Velzke was born on 26 January 1898 at Rice Co., Minnesota.¹ She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Rice Co. Families, Their History, Our Heritage, pg. 446. Anna Maria Velzke married Robert Colvell on 5 November 1960 at Ramsey Co., Minnesota. Anna Maria Velzke died on 6 May 1974 at Ramsey Co., Minnesota, at age 76.¹ She was buried at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.¹

     August Frederich Michael Velzke was a farmer. He was born on 23 December 1855 at Germany.¹ He was the son of Ludwig Velzke and Augusta Budtke. August Frederich Michael Velzke married Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball on 27 December 1887 at Germany. August Frederich Michael Velzke immigrated in 1891 Immigrated from Treblin, Pommern, Germany, in Spring of 1891. He died on 9 November 1926 at Wells Twsp., Rice Co., Minnesota, at age 70.^2,1 He was buried on 12 November 1926 at Concordia Cemetery, North Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.^2,1

     Emma Velzke was born on 28 August 1897 at Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.¹ She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Emma Velzke married August Schmidt on 9 November 1919 at Trinty Church, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.¹ Emma Velzke lived in 1981 at Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota. Rice Co.      Erna Bertha Velzke was born on 25 January 1904 at Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.^1,2 She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Erna Bertha Velzke married Wesley Grant Schreiber in 1924.¹ Erna Bertha Velzke lived in 1981 at Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota. Rice Co. Families, Their History, Our Heritage, 1981, pg 446. Appears that Erna and Wesley had two children. Her Social Security Number was 470-18-7294 issued in Minnesota, last residence was Faribault, Minnesota. She died on 9 October 1997 at Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota, at age 93.² She was buried at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.²

     Helena Minnie Mathilda Velzke was born on 30 September 1900 at Morristown Twsp., Rice Co., Minnesota. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.³ She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Helena Minnie Mathilda Velzke was a Housewife. Helena Minnie Mathilda Velzke was also known as Helen. She married John Peter McCarthy, son of Jeremiah McCarthy and Mary C. McGinnis, on 2 November 1922 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.³ Helena Minnie Mathilda Velzke was a Lutheran.

Helen was the ninth child in a family of eleven children. Because of the lack of beds for all the family, Helen and her sister Anna slept with their father and their sister Erna slept with their mother until Helen was about seven years old. Their Grandfather Kuball lived with them and also slept on the living room couch. Once a year the family would go to town to buy new clothes.
One year Helen remembers that her mother purchased a red sweater with a sailor collar and a coat with four or five capes on it and as long as her ankles. It was a very warm coat, but was so heavy she could hardly walk. Helen remembers some childhood experiences with her brothers and sisters. When she was about five or six years old, Helen, Erna and Wally were in the house with their grandfather while their mother and father were in the fields, and their other brothers were at school. They decided to clean all the cupboards out and surprise their mother. They could not find any old rags, so they used some old green window shades. Upon getting wet, the shades faded and all the cupboards ended up green on the inside. Their older sister, Martha, had to clean all the cupboards over again. When Helen was about seven or eight years old, she and Wally and about eight other neighbors and cousins were at a cousins house. There was an old wood stove outside in a canvas tent, used for cooking food for the pigs. The children put hay and wood in the stove, started the fire and put potatoes on the stove in an old kettle to cook. The stove became red hot, cooking the potatoes, but fortunately did not burn down the tent. The children enjoyed dogs and cats as pets on the farm. One time Helen, Erna and Wally were each given a puppy as a pet of their own. One day they took the puppies up an outside stairway to the loft in the chicken coop. Helen's dog accidentally fell from the second story to the ground. Helen rushed down, picked up the puppy and held it in her lap. The puppy proceeded to vomit all over Helen, and she did not care for dogs after that experience.
For recreation, the children would often walk for miles to friends homes to play. Helen was born with a handicap in the right leg and arm, but could keep up with her brothers and sisters equally well. The children attended a one room country school containing grades one through eight. Helen finished the eighth grade. There was not enough money for books and clothes to send the children on to high school. When the family lived in Faribault, the children had a two and a half mile walk to school. When the weather was bad, the children remained at home. When the family lived in Morristown, they attended the public school a half a mile away in the winter. In the spring and fall when the weather was milder, they attended the Lutheran school a mile and a half away.
Helen's parents both attended school in Germany, and felt education was important, encouraging their children to attend. Helen remembers one time in school when she was about ten years old and was put on the "whisper" bench when the teacher thought she had been misbehaving. Feeling the punishment was unjustified, Helen began to cry. When she would not stop crying, the teacher slapped her hands with a strap. Helen was so upset, that she ran home at lunch time. Later, her father came to school and told the teacher that he could not spank his children again. Helen was very good at memorizing and could sing many songs from memory. She had difficulty learning in school. Her sister Anna would sit in a corner at home with her and help Helen memorize her lessons for school. She did not learn to well until she was 15 years old. The letters just did not make any sense to her. Today we would say Helen has a learning disability which she learned to overcome by herself.
When she was sixteen, Helen did light housework and was a cook at Severy School for two years. At the age of eighteen, she worked in a shoe factory and at the St. Paul Hotel in St. Paul, MN, as a maid. When she was 22, she married John McCarthy. Helen was always very active in church work. She attended St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Winona and was a member of the women's guild helping assemble the monthly newsletter, serve dinners and helping with the bazaars. She also belonged to the guild at the Sauer Memorial Home for the elderly where she helped with entertaining the residents, playing bingo with them and helped with the annual craft bazaar. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren and relatives in various parts of the United States.
When she was seventy-one, Helen started to take painting lessons at Valley View Tower in Winona. She specialized in acrylics and oils. Helen painted many lovely pictures which she hung in her home as well as gave to family and friends. Helen lived in the home on Fourth Street until she sold it in October of 1979, and moved into an apartment at Winhaven Court on Main Street. When Helen turned 90 years old, her family and friends gathered to give her a special birthday celebration.

On 01Oct1996, Helen McCarthy entered the Glendoveer Retirement Villa, in Portland, Oregon. According to a letter from Ann Kurth on 23Nov1996, Helen "...needs almost constant nursing care and had become extremely forgetful and confused". Helen until Summer 1994, lived at 104 Main St., #504, Winona, MN. She lived circa August 1994 at Gresham, Multnomah Co., Oregon; living with her daughter Beatrice. Her Social Security Number was 477-24-0809, issued in Minnesota. She lived in October 1996 at Glendoveer Retirement Villa, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. She died on 23 December 1997 at Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at age 97.⁴ She was buried on 30 December 1997 at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.^4,5

PORTLAND, Ore. - Helen M. McCarthy, 97, of Portland and formerly of Faribault Minn., died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, in Portland. Helen was born Sept 30, 1900, to August and Hermina (Kuball)) Velzke in Morristown. She married John McCarthy and he preceded her in death. She has been living in the Portland area for the past four years, otherwise her home has been in Minnesota. She is survived by two daughters, Beatrice Kirchner of Gresham, Ore., and Helen Kranz of St Charles, Minn; nine grandchildren; 20 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one great-grandson, 11 siblings: Louisa Gray, Ida Velzke, Martha Krenz, Otto Velzke, Hugo Velzke, Henry Velzke, Emma Schmidt Anna Colvell, Walter Velzke, Olga Velzke and Erna B. Schreiber. Services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Boldt Funeral Home in Faribault with the Rev. Fran Lieb officiating. Interment will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Faribault Visitation will be held in the Boldt Funeral Home on today for one hour prior to the services. Boldt Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.

     Henry C. Velzke Sr. was born on 20 March 1896 at North Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.¹ He was the son of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Henry C. Velzke Sr. married Anna Frieda Schwichtenberg on 30 October 1919.¹ Henry and Anna had seven children. Henry C. Velzke Sr. died on 27 September 1977 at age 81. He was buried at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.

He was the son of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Hugo August Velzke married Margaret Mathilda Krause on 15 June 1922 at Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota. Hugo August Velzke died on 11 June 1971 at Rice Co., Minnesota, at age 77.

Louise Velzke died on 4 April 1975 at St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota, at age 86.¹ She was buried on 7 April 1975 at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.¹

     Ludwig Velzke was born at Germany. He married Augusta Budtke.

     Martha Velzke married Herman Krenz. Rice Co. Families, Their History, Our Heritage, 1981, pg 446. Martha and Herman both died when their children were small. Martha Velzke was born in July 1891 at Minnesota. She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Martha Velzke died on 30 September 1928 at Rice Co., Minnesota, at age 37. She was buried at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.

     Olga Velzke was born on 4 October 1905.¹ She was the daughter of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Olga Velzke died on 12 October 1905.¹ She was buried at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.²

     The cause of death was died at age of 3 years old, due to measles and whooping cough. Rice Co. Families, Their History, Our Heritage, 1981, pg 446. Otto Velzke was born on 31 December 1892 at Minnesota. He was the son of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Otto Velzke died on 19 July 1896 at Morristown Twsp., Rice Co., Minnesota, at age 3.

     Shirley Velzke was the daughter of Walter Velzke and Serena Meyer.

     Walter Velzke was born on 10 June 1902.¹ He was the son of August Frederich Michael Velzke and Hermina Caroline Magdalene Kuball. Walter Velzke married Serena Meyer in 1920.¹ Walter Velzke married Anna Lindemmier. Rice Co. Families, Their History, Our Heritage, pg. 446. Walter Velzke died on 5 September 1977 at age 75. He was buried at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery, Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota.

     Joseph Veno Jr. was born on 28 February 1887 at New Brunswick, Canada. He married Estella Marie Tourville in 1918. Joseph Veno Jr. died on 28 December 1956 at St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minnesota, at age 69.
