Emery Purdy was also known as Emory. He was born on 8 October 1818 at Westchester Co., New York.2 He was the son of David Purdy and Elizabeth Ann Hopkins. Emery Purdy was baptized on 14 June 1820.2 Emery Purdy was a Farmer. He married Frances Caroline Monell. Emery Purdy married Lucy H. Young on 4 December 1866. Emery Purdy died on 18 September 1872 at Red Wing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota, at age 53.2 The cause of death was Acute neuralgia and congestion of the Lungs. He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Red Wing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota.3 Death Record states that Emery arrived in Minnesota in 1864.
At Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing, in block B, lot number 169 is the grave of Emery Purdy (My Husband, Emery Purdy, Born Oct 3, 1820, died Sep 13, 1872). To the immediate right of the tall grave for Emery, is a small memorial in the shape of a book, with the only words being of EMERY PURDY. There is also a Grand Army of the Republic memorial staked along side the grave.
Following from Goodhue County Republican Newspaper, Thursday, 26Sep1872, page 4 column 2.
Died in Red Wing, on Thursday morning September 19th, Mr. Emery Purdy, aged 53 years and 11 months. Mr. Purdy was formerly a resident of Ithaca, N.Y. He was member of a large family consisting of six brothers and six sisters, whose attachment for each other was peculiarly warm. Two of the brothers Haschal and William, are living in immediate neighborhood of the late residence of the deceased and are widely known and respected in this vicinity. One of the brothers died in the army of the Potomac, in the deceased also served as Captain in the 10th New York regiment of cavalry, from 1861 to 1864. In 1864, Mr. Purdy came to Red Wing. During his residence here he successfully engaged in farming. He held the position of President of the Goodhue County Agricultural Society for three years, and contributed much to its efficiency. Those who have shared the hospitality of his home, and who knew him most intimately, speak warmly of his courtesy and kind of heart. His sickness was of only one week's continuance, taking the form of acute neuralgia, and congestion of the lungs. Not until a few hours before his death was he considered dangerously ill by his family. As he had been a man of unusual strength of constitution his sudden and untimely death occasioned a shock in the community such as has rarely been experienced here.

- 9th great-grandfather of Steven Harn Redman
Francis (1) Purdy was born circa 1595 at York, England.1 He was born circa 1616 at England.2,3 He married Mary Elizabeth Brundage, daughter of John Brundage and Rachel Hubbard, in 1642.
Francis Purdy left Yorkshire, England, with two of his sons and crossed the Atlantic, settling at Concord, Massachusetts. He was among the first settlers of Fairfield, Connecticut, where he and his wife Mary were residing by at least 1644. He negotiated and witnessed the land agreement between the town of Fairfield and the Poquannock Indians in 1657, and died the following year in Fairfield. Edward E. Died: 1658Francis died in October of 1658. Probate documents exist in CT archives. There was a "great sickness" in Fairfield at that time so a number of people died. Mary Brundish was christened 10 Dec 1628; not birth date. She did not have a middle name Elizabeth. The Elizabeth part seems to have originated with the book on Fairfield history "Historie of Fairfield" Vol 1 1889 p 324-326 by Elizabeth Hubbel Schenk, who got the date right but added to the name. The christening record appears in Partridge's transcription of the St. Mary Elm parish documents, but it does not appear on the microfiche or microfilm of the parish record book. Transcriptions include loose pages and other material that are part of the church records but that may not be part of the book that is photographed. Mary had a brother James christened at the same church. The church is still actively used and is located on Elm street (hence the name) in the southwestern corner of downtown Ipswich. Some of the inner door is said to date from Norman times. The use of two given names is very rare before the mid 1700's. Her family name was Brundish, but it became corrupted through phonetic spelling to Brundage by the time her brother's children were adults, and has been Brundage ever since.
