Following obituary from Red Wing Daily Republican, 18Nov1940 (Monday), pg 8:3.
Miss Margaret Lois Carlson, 24, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Carlson, 1416 Third street, met a sudden death in the yards of the Milwaukee railroad here Saturday night under the wheels of a freight train. The tragedy was discovered by the police after they had been notified by the young woman's frantic parents that she was missing from her home.
Miss Carlson, who suffered a nervous breakdown about a year ago and had been in poor health since, left home in the family car some time between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Saturday, saying nothing to anyone as to where she was going. Her brother, Robert, the only other member of the family at home at the time noted her absence and decided she had gone with her mother for a visit at the Guy Thoen home.
When she was not found there the police were notified. The Carlson car was found parked near the plant of the Red Wing Motor company alongside the railroad yards and the search was continued in that neighborhood, resulting in the discovery of the body at about 9 O'clock. It is believed that Miss Carlson was run over by a local freight, which had been switching in the yards earlier in the evening. A. C. Larson of Zumbrota, deputy coroner, was called in the absence of Coroner Russell F. Edstrom from the city, and held that Miss Carlson's death was accidental. No Inquest will be held.
Miss Carlson was born In Red Wing on Feb. 27, 1916, and spent her entire life in this city. She attended the public schools and graduated from the Red Wing high school in 1934. She was very active in high school circles and was an honor student. She had been employed as stenographer at the office of the Red Wing Union Stoneware company since 1936. A young woman of many splendid traits of heart and mind, she was popular among a large circle of friends and her death will bring sorrow to many. She was a member of Christ church.
Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Carlson, a sister, Mrs. Vivian Thoen, Red Wing, and two brothers, Robert Carlson, Red Wing, and Burton Carlson, Huntington Park, Calif. The sympathy of the community, extended the bereaved family in the sudden tragedy, which has clouded their home. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Edstrom chapel and at 2 o'clock at Christ church with the Rev. Monroe Baille officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery. The services at the chapel will be private.
