RoseMarie "Rick" Walz formerly of Endicott
RoseMarie "Rick" Walz, who was president of the Mount Vernon County Club, died surrounded by family at her home in Lake Monticello, Palmyra, VA, January 30, 2010. She was 73. The cause was Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, a rare neurodegenerative disorder. Rick was born June 9, 1936 in Endicott, NY, the daughter of Joseph and Teresa Christina, and graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 1954. After moving to Alexandria, VA, she married Christopher "Kit" Walz on July 19, 1974 at Washington Farm Methodist Church near Mount Vernon.
Mrs. Walz was volunteered as a teacher with Saint James Church Head Start, then worked as assistant to the Executive Director of the National Future Farmers of America, and later as office manager with Ross and Moncure, Inc. in Alexandria. But it was as a golfer that Rick Walz made her mark. She served on the board of the Mount Vernon Country Club, in Alexandria, and later became the first woman to be elected president of a private golf club in the Washington area. Under her, the club's finances were restructured, allowing it to become one of Northern Virginia's premier country clubs.
The Walzes moved to Lake Monticello in 2003. She joined the Lake's Golf Committee, working to improve Lake Monticello Golf Course and then served on the Golfers Youth Development Foundation which she helped found. The foundation provides assistance and instruction to aspiring young golfers who otherwise wouldn't have access to the sport. She also promoted various activities that allowed women greater participation in the Lake's golf programs. Ms.
Walz was an expert golfer herself, winning championships at Mount Vernon Country Club and championships six years in a row at Lake Monticello.
Rick is survived by Christopher, her husband of 35 years; and by daughters, Rebecca (Walz) Tripoli of Atlanta, GA, Brenda (Walz) Van Ness of Washington, VA, and Robert Walz of Richmond; eight grandchildren and one great -grandchild. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick, VA on 11:00 AM, February 15, 2010.
