Elkhart boy, 4, killed
ELKHART - A 4-year-old Elkhart boy who was struck by a car in the 1200 block of Middlebury Street about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday died of his injuries shortly after 3 p.m. in Elkhart General Hospital. Dead is Scott Schlabach of 1303 Middlebury, son of Mr. and Mrs.
John W. Schlabach. The child was struck by a car driven by Devon L. Goodrich Jr., 23, of 22291 Woodside Drive, Bristol, who told police he was driving west on Middlebury when he saw a boy on a bicycle "wobbling" in front of him. Goodrich said he swerved into the eastbound lane to avoid the bicycle and then had to continue across the lane to avoid oncoming traffic.

His car then jumped the curb and crossed the sidewalk, striking the child. Goodrich's vehicle then struck a house at 1215 Middlebury. Police said the child was thrown 35 feet by the impact. He was taken to the hospital by an Elkhart Fire Department ambulance. Elkhart County Coroner Marvin Riegsecker ruled the child died of head and internal injuries.

Scott was born Feb. 23, 1980, in Elkhart. Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Kenneth Allen and Josh Scott, both at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John (Geraldine) Schlabach Sr. of Osceola, Christ Rink of Bristol and Betty Rink of Illinois; and a great-grandfather, Samuel Rink of Goshen. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in merman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
