Lissene Catherine Black died on 30 August 1948 at St. Louis, Missouri, at age 71.^1,3 She was buried at Lake Charles Park Cemetery, Bel-Nor, St. Louis Co., Missouri.¹

We are sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Lizzie Frazier of St. Louis. She and her family lived near Hillsboro for many years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Archie Moss, of Hillsboro Route 1, Mrs. Ora McGruger of Springfield, Mo., and Mrs. Beulah Bible, who lived with her mother, and two sons, Lawrence and Elmer. We extend our sympathy to the family.

Miriam Ellsworth Black married Max Wilton Grubbs on 31 March 1934. Miriam Ellsworth Black died on 19 May 2012 at Anderson Co., South Carolina, at age 97.^1,2 She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Anderson, Anderson Co., South Carolina.²

MRS. MIRIAM B. GRUBBS
June 16, 1914 - May 19, 2012

Mrs. Miriam Black Grubbs, age 97, of Anderson, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Anderson. She was born in Banning, CA, the daughter of the late Curtiss Wesley Black and the late Maude Comfort Blanchard Black. In 1932 she was married to Max Wilton Grubbs, who became a respected professor and tennis coach at Anderson University. They were married for 45 years until his untimely death on May 12, 1977. In 1937 Miriam and Max moved from Banning, CA to Belton, SC.

Mrs. Grubbs was a member of Anderson First Baptist Church where she was an active member and sang in the church choir. She served as a past president of the Belton Music Club and the Belton Garden Club. Miriam was also active in the Anderson Garden Club and in the activities of Anderson University.

Survivors include two daughters, Victoria "Vicki" Grubbs Cox, and her husband, Walter T. Cox, III, of Punta Gorda, FL, and Caroline Grubbs Singleton and her husband C. Philip Singleton of Anderson. Also left to carry on her legacy are 5 grandchildren: Lisa Victoria Cox Craig (Andrew), Walter Thompson Cox, IV, Sarah Victoria Long (William), Margaret Leanne Schaaf (Christian) and James Pickens Lever (Mira); 11 great-grandchildren: Grace Craig, Mary Craig, Katherine Craig, Miriam Cox, Riley Cox, William A. Long, Kelly Long, Daniel L. Castles, III, Austin L. Castles, Jamie Lever, and Jordan Booth; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Black; a nephew, Tim Black and his wife Lynda Black; a niece, Linda Ingram and her husband Wayne Ingram.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Miriam Grubbs will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at 11 AM with Rev. Dr. Jack Couch officiating. The family will gather with friends following the service at Forest Lawn.

     Wesley Blanchard Black was born on 23 June 1918 at San Bernardino Co., California. He was the son of Curtis Wesley Black and Maude Comfort Blanchard. Wesley Blanchard Black married Marjorie Elizabeth Connolly, daughter of Norman Clifton Connolly and Glayds Mildred Berry, in 1940 at Yuma, Yuma Co., Arizona. Wesley Blanchard Black died on 7 June 1994 at Riverside Co., California, at age 75.¹ He was buried at San Gorgonio Memorial Park, Banning, Riverside Co., California.¹

     Mary Matilda Blackford also went by the name of Tillie. She was born on 24 October 1854 at Highhouse, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.¹ She married John Thomas Miller, son of John Patterson Miller and Mary Anne Harn, in 1877. Mary Matilda Blackford died on 8 May 1946 at Monongahela, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, at age 91.¹ She was buried at Pleasant View Cemetery, Smock, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.¹

     Dale L. Blaes was born on 18 January 1940 at Illinois.¹ He married Laura Ann Kilby, daughter of Edward Thornton Harn and Marilyn Kilby, on 20 April 1996 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Smithton, St. Clair Co., Illinois. Dale L. Blaes died on 28 June 2023 at Belleville, St. Clair Co., Illinois, at age 83.¹ He was buried at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, St. Clair Co., Illinois.¹ He graduated in 1957 at Cathedral High School, Belleville, St. Clair Co., Illinois. In August 1996 Dale L. Blaes was a Postmaster, at Smithton, St. Clair Co., Illinois.

     Terry Blake married Ruth Ryan, daughter of Arthur D. Ryan and June Lorraine Harn.¹

     Russell Edward Blalack was born on 24 August 1921 at Miami Co., Ohio.¹ He married Eileen Cecelia Magruder, daughter of John B. Magruder and Elizabeth Plummer, on 26 December 1981 at Clark Co., Nevada. Russell Edward Blalack died on 28 April 2007 at Sun City, Maricopa Co., Arizona, at age 85.¹ He was buried at Wheelock Cemetery, West Milton, Miami Co., Ohio.¹

     David M. Blanchard was born on 3 August 1858 at Oxford Co., Maine.¹ He married Miriam Octavia Ellsworth, daughter of Jeremiah Heman Ellsworth and Margaret L. Bradbury, in 1890. David M. Blanchard died on 16 April 1927 at Riverside Co., California, at age 68.¹ He was buried at San Gorgonio Memorial Park, Banning, Riverside Co., California.¹

     Maude Comfort Blanchard was born on 7 June 1892 at Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota.¹ She was the daughter of David M. Blanchard and Miriam Octavia Ellsworth. Maude Comfort Blanchard married Curtis Wesley Black in 1915 at California. Maude Comfort Blanchard died on 6 February 1974 at Banning, Riverside Co., California, at age 81.¹ She was buried at San Gorgonio Memorial Park, Banning, Riverside Co., California.¹

     David M. Bliss was born on 17 July 1845 at Lima, Allen Co., Ohio.¹ He married Mary A. Lytle, daughter of Robert Lytle and Hannah Knox, on 5 January 1867.¹

DAVID M. BLISS, farmer, P. O. Delphos, was born at Lima, Ohio, July 17, 1845; son of Col. Lester and Belinda (Hover) Bliss. From the high schools of the county, he entered the Ohio Wesleyan University, at Delaware, studying there two years. He spent some time reading law, with the intention of following the legal profession, but eventually engaged in mercantile business at Delphos, for a year and a half, then went to Sidney, Ohio, and edited the Sidney Journal for over a year, after which time he returned to this county, and turned his attention to farming and breeding shorthorn thorough-bred cattle, of the Lady Elizabeth stock. Mr. Bliss served the people as justice of the peace and township treasurer etc. He was married January 5, 1867, to Mary A. Lytle, who died nine months later without issue. She was a daughter of R. K. Lytle, of Delphos. Our subject's second marriage occurred September 20, 1869, with Alice J. Neel, who was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, September 10, 1845, and by this union were born five children: Lester L., born August 10, 1870; Neel V., born March 28, 1872; Charles M. and Morgan C. (twins), born September 11, 1876, died in infancy; and Mary Aldulia, born November 15,1878. Our subject is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics, he is a Democrat.¹
