HOME AT NEW SALEM
Samuel O. McCormick, of New Salem, one of Fayette county's most distinguished and active citizens, died suddenly last night In the Shadyside hospital, Pittsburgh, a few hours after he was suddenly stricken while at the William Penn hotel.
Long recognized as a leader In Industrial, financial and school affairs of the county, Mr. McCormick was one of the outstanding citizens of Fayette county. He had not been in robust health for some time but his condition was not regarded as alarming and he went to Pittsburgh yesterday on a business trip. While stopping at the William Penn hotel where he was to meet business associates,
Mr. McCormick suddenly stricken. Friends and hotel attaches Immediately went to his aide and he was rushed to the Shadyside hospital where death followed a few minutes after his admission to the hospital. Death was attributed as due to a brain hemorrhage. Mr. McCormick was 59 years of age.
In recent years, Mr. McCormick had devoted his principal attention to his dairy business, his dairy farm being recognized as one of the largest and most modern in Fayette county.
Mr. McCormick was the son of Elliot Evans and Elizabeth J. (Scott) McCormick, and was born in Redstone township on October 3, 1878. After a preparatory education in the schools of his native township he entered Duff's Business college in Pittsburgh. Returning to Redstone township he became associated with his father in the management of the large McCormick farm In Redstone township and for two years remained actively identified with agricultural pursuits. He never lost his Interest in Fayette county agriculture and in recent years devoted most of his attention to his farming interests. He was active in agricultural and Grange affairs throughout his life.
In 1892, Mr. McCormick was employed by Jesse B. Brown, of New Salem, and in 1898 he entered the mercantile business and held a position with the Shamrock Supply Company. In 1899 he accepted a position as assistant to construction superintendent of the Buffington plant of the H. C. Frick Coke Company, and later became identified with the Union Supply Company, serving that organization for two years. He also served for two years with the Monongahela Railroad. In 1906 he formed a partnership with Presley Stevenson, under the firm name of Stevenson and McCormick, dealers in feed and builders' supplies. The next year he purchased his partner's interests. In 1921 he helped organize and became president of the Miners' State Bank in New Salem. He became interested in a number of independent coal companies and was regarded as one of the leading coal operators and authorities on coal operations. A few years ago he organized the Searights Transportation Company, operating bus lines out of Uniontown, New Salem, Searights, Kelster, Royal, Smock, Grindstone and other points In Fayette county. For several years he was actively interested in real estate and insurance.
Mr. McCormick served for five years as postmaster at New Salem. He served for nearly a generation as a school director in Menallen township and for several years served that township as a road supervisor. As road supervisor of Menallen township he was instrumental in building the first section of state highway in Fayette county.

On June 29, 1904, he married Miss Evelyn B. Harn, member of a prominent and pioneer family in Fayette county. Upon his marriage, the McCormicks established their home in New Salem where they resided continuously. Their home is one of the most attractive in the county and was the meeting place of friends and associates who enjoyed the genial hospitality of the McCormicks through the years.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Evelyn Harn McCormick, two daughters, Mary Elizabeth, a teacher in the Brownsville Junior high school; Jane, at home, and one son, David Hess McCormick, who resides in Uniontown. Hotel and hospital authorities notified the family immediately of Mr. McCormick's illness and Mrs. McCormick and daughter, Mary, rushed to Pittsburgh at once. The other members of the family arrived a little later.
Mr. McCormick was In Uniontown on Monday. He chatted with a number of friends and apparently was in good health. He was jovial and intensely Interested in the development of the county.
He was actively identified with community enterprises in his township and county. During the war he took an active leadership in sales of Liberty Bonds, service registration and other efforts successfully to prosecute the war. He was active in the Fayette County Agricultural Extension Association, in organizations of coal producers, and in the Greater Fayette Council.
Surviving In addition to the immediate late members of his family are three brothers: Jess McCormick, of Smock; Emmett McCormick, of Pittsburgh, and George McCormick, who lives In Virginia. Funeral arrangements were not completed last night pending the return of the body to the McCormick home at New Salem. Arrangements for the funeral will be completed today.

—UNIONTOWN June 22.—Samuel O. McCormick, 59, of New Salem, one of Fayette County’s best known and most active citizens, died Tuesday night in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, a few hours after he was stricken in a Pittsburgh hotel.

Long recognized as a leader in industrial, financial and school affairs, he had devoted his principal attention in recent years to his dairy business, his being recognized as the largest and most modern in the county.

A native of Redstone township where he was born October 3, 1878, a son of Elliott Evans and Elizabeth J. Scott McCormick, he attended a business college in Pittsburgh and then aided his father in operation of the farm.

He became interested in a number of independent coal companies and was regarded as one of the leading coal operators and authorities on coal operations. A few years ago he organized the Searights Transportation Company, operating bus lines out of Uniontown, New Salem, Scarights, Keister, Royal, Smock, Grindstone and other points in Fayette county.

Mr. McCormick served for five years as postmaster at New Salem. He served for nearly a generation as a school director in Menallen township and for several years served that township as a road supervisor. Sarah Jane McCormick Lohr, 84, of Latrobe died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital.
Jane was born April 24, 1925 in New Salem, a daughter of the late Samuel O. and Evelyn (Harn) McCormick.
A member of Latrobe United Methodist Church, she was a graduate of Uniontown High School and the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) and also attended West Virginia University.
Prior to retirement, Jane was a teacher in the Albert Gallatin High School, a teacher's aide in the Greater Latrobe School District and a library assistant at Adams Memorial Library.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dean E. Lohr Jr; her sister, Mary Elizabeth "Bill" Davis; her brother, David H. McCormick, and her grandson, Michael P. Lohr.
Jane is survived by her son, David D. Lohr and wife, Carol, her daughter, Anne L. McDonald and husband, Jim, and her granddaughter, Jessica A. Lohr, all of Latrobe, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Hartman- Graziano Funeral Home Inc., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe, where service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Aimee W. Twigg officiating.
Interment will take place in Church Hill Cemetery, McClellandtown.

In 1989 he retired as senior engineering technician from Argonne National Laboratory in Idaho. He resided off and on in the Philippines from 1998 until he made his home in Prosser in 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Maya McCulley of Prosser; his mother, Opal McCulley of Prosser; and five sisters, Wanda Roth of Union Gap, Margie Burke of Yakima, Helen Boozer of Pasco, Wash., Bonnie Petty of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Mary Jane Walker of Prosser. There will be no public services. Prosser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
