- 2nd great-granduncle of Steven Harn Redman
Grandson of Jacob Ruple
John Jacob Rupel was born on 20 October 1797 at Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.1,2,3 He was the son of Jacob Rupel and Nancy Ann Livengood. John Jacob Rupel married Mary Peck, daughter of Nancy Ann Livengood, before 1821 at Pennsylvania. John Jacob Rupel married Susannah Bowman, daughter of Jacob Bowman and Elizabeth (?), on 21 October 1841 at South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.4,5,6 John Jacob Rupel died on 21 April 1888 at South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 90.4,1,2 He was buried at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, Greene Twsp., St. Joseph Co., Indiana.1,2 He lived in 1824 at Stark Co., Ohio.3 In 1831 John Jacob Rupel was a Farmer, at St. Joseph Co., Indiana.3
John Rupel, Sr.
The death of pioneer, John Rupel, deserves more than a passing notice. He was born in Somerset county, Pa., on the 20th of October, 1797, so that at his death, which occurred on the 21st inst., he was ninety years, six months and one day old. In the early days, Somerset county was a wilderness and the opportunities for education were limited, the nearest school being nine miles away. This school he attended for three months, boarding nearby and paying for his board by threshing with a flail in the evening until nine o'clock. Being deprived of all luxuries, having no time or opportunities for late hours and rich deserts, he built up an iron constitution which stood him well in need in his old days. As said, the place where he was born was a wilderness, and his only tools were the ax and the rifle.
Many a tussle he had with the wild beasts of the region, and his early habits were so strong that in his younger days he would hie to the "Clay Banks" somewhere in Liberty township, and many a noble buck fell a victim to his unerring aim.
"Westward the star of empire wends its way," and the subject of this sketch kept step with the music. In 1824 he settled in Stark county, Ohio; in 1829 he removed to the St. Joseph valley, and settled on a piece of land now close to the corporation limits of the city of Elkhart; in 1831 he patented 80 acres of land on Sumption's Prairie, where he has resided ever since, a period of fifty-seven years. When he landed his goods upon the ground in April there came fall of snow of three feet. He was without any shelter except some boards set up against the limb of a tree. Tere was no feed for his stock, and he was compelled to fell trees to let them browse. He had not a dollar in money left, but he had what was much better, a strong constitution, good health, indomitable will, and habits of industry which are sure to win in the race for life. He was soon enabled to add to his meagre acres, and he kept adding until he had at least 1,000 acres of the best farming land in St. Joseph county.
His first patent for land was signed by Andrew Jackson, March 31st, 1831; the second by Andrew Jackson, August 5th, 1831; the third by Franklin Pierce, June 3, 1855. He was twice married and had seven children, five by his first wife and two by his last, viz: Tim and Oz Rupel, all of whom he gave farms and left them well-to-do in the world.
He never sought public favor or position and had no higher ambition than to be a frugal farmer, coupled with strict integrity and honor. It is a kind provision of Providence that, as the years roll over, the tenacity to life grows weaker, and the last intelligible words he uttered were: "I want rest." He could look back over a well spent life, and look forward with hope to the promise accorded to all sincere Christians.
The esteem in which he was held was demonstrated by his neighbors, at least seventy-five carriages being in the funeral procession on Tuesday. Elder Moore, of Buchanan, officiated, and preached a sermon which brought tears to many eyes.
The only remaining member of the original family is David Rupel, who lives near North Liberty. Thus has passed away another of the old pioneers, of whom nothing but praise could be said.
