Marguerite grew up on a farm near Centralia, Missouri. She married A.D. Spurling on May 26, 1940, one day after graduating from Centralia High School. They were married for 63 years. He preceded her in death in 2004. Marguerite and A.D. lived on a farm north of Mexico from 1944 until they moved to town in 1996. They had three children: Maxine (Carl) Ensor, A.D. (Betty Ann) Spurling, Jr., and Glenda (Rick) Wilson. Maxine, Carl and Glenda all preceded her in death.
Mrs. Spurling was always busy from sun up to sun down. She had a garden and raised chickens and had eggs. She spent many hours canning vegetables and meat to provide for her family. She drove tractors and combines alongside her husband. She also helped rake, bale and buck bales.
Marguerite worked at Mattingly’s and Woolworth’s dime stores in Mexico. She was also active in Carter Cavaliers 4H Club, where her children were members. She and A.D. made and quilted many quilts together. She made each of her grandchildren a quilt at high school graduation. In later years, she started embroidering tea towels. She donated many to various auctions, sold some, and gave many sets as gifts.
She attended Littleby Methodist Church until it closed and then attended Bethel Methodist Church until it closed. She then joined Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Marguerite and A.D. always sat right next to each other when they went anywhere in their truck or car. Everyone knew who it was when they came down the road. A.D. would drive and she would be nuzzled up right next to him.

Herman John Merz married Geraldine Purdy, daughter of William Hopkins Purdy and Anna Christiansen, on 2 September 1925 at Salem, Marion Co., Oregon.3 Herman John Merz died on 12 March 1976 at Florence, Lane Co., Oregon, at age 81.4,1 He was buried on 16 March 1976 at Ada Cemetery, Ada, Lane Co., Oregon.1,5 He lived in 1960 at Florence, Lane Co., Oregon. His Social Security Number was 540-44-8209. Issued in Oregen in 1955. Social Security Death Index (b- 16Jul1894 d- Mar1976).

Herman John Merz of 369 Juniper Street, Florence, died March 12. He was born in Harbor, Ore., July 16, 1894, and was united in marriage to Geraldine Purdy in Turner, Ore., September 2, 1925. In 1928 he move to Ada, Ore., where he and his wife owned and operated a dairy ranch for 27 years. After the sale of the dairy ranch, the couple pioneered again, this time on a beef ranch on Ford Fraser, British Columbia, Canada. This they owned and operated for 12 years after the sale of which they returned to their home in Florence.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine; two sons, Robert L. Merz of Florence and David L. Merz of Fort Fraser, British Columbia, Canada; two daughters, Mrs. B.W. (Marilyn) Adkins of Fairfax, Virginia and Mrs. G.A. (Karen) Christensen of San Jose, CA; one sister, Mrs. Amelia M. Thorne of Coos Bay, Ore; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Mar. 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the Riverside Chapel, with Pastor Bernard Plumb officiating. Private interment will follow in the Ada Cemetery, Ada, Ore.1
