She was born the daughter of Anderson and Pearl Fellows Merry. On March 12, 1938, she was married to Thomas Orville Pemberton Jr. in Moberly, and he preceded her in death on April 20, 2000. Mrs. Pemberton attended Centralia High School and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Centralia. She was a dedicated wife of a farmer and co-worker with her husband in the real estate broker's office. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard Merry and Wallace Lee Merry; two sisters, Fern Minor and Iris Lowery; and a son, Ronald Lee Pemberton, on Nov. 30, 1999. Emerald Rose Pemberton, died at Boone Hospital Center at age 87. She lived on 1 August 2000 at Centralia, Boone Co., Missouri.

     Frances Fern Merry was born on 28 April 1915 at Centralia, Audrain Co., Missouri. She was the daughter of Anderson Hoyt Merry and Pearl Ada Fellows.¹ Frances Fern Merry married James Roy Key Jr. on 6 December 1941 at Sacred Heart Rectory, Columbia, Boone Co., Missouri. Frances Fern Merry married William Joseph Minor on 12 May 1947 at Moberly, Randolph Co., Missouri. Frances Fern Merry died on 31 July 2000 at Columbia Regional Hospital, Columbia, Boone Co., Missouri, at age 85. She was buried on 2 August 2000 at Centralia Cemetery, Centralia, Boone Co., Missouri. Service Cross Given Sergt. J. K. Key, Jr.

Staff Sergt. James R. Key, 3, of Columbia, who was reported by the United Press as having been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross Wednesday, had been overseas for about a year when he was reported missing in action on Aug. 15. He had been stationed in England, and was then transferred to the Middle East.
His wife, the former Miss Frances Fern Merry of near Clark, and their two children are living at 203 Melbourne Street. Key has two brothers in the army, John Elliot, stationed in Kentucky, and Leo, stationed in New Jersey.

Marguerite Maxine (Merry) Spurling, 96, of Mexico, died on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at the King’s Daughters Home, where she resided.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Arnold Funeral Home with Rev. Tresia Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation is Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Marguerite Maxine (Merry) Spurling was born on November 24, 1921 to Anderson and Pearl (Fellows) Merry at home in Riena, Missouri. She was one of seven children: Rose Pemberton, Violet Sucher, Iris Lowery, Fern Minor, Jack Merry, and Howard Merry. They preceded her in death along with her parents.

Marguerite grew up on a farm near Centralia, Missouri. She married A.D. Spurling on May 26, 1940, one day after graduating from Centralia High School. They were married for 63 years. He preceded her in death in 2004. Marguerite and A.D. lived on a farm north of Mexico from 1944 until they moved to town in 1996. They had three children: Maxine (Carl) Ensor, A.D. (Betty Ann) Spurling, Jr., and Glenda (Rick) Wilson. Maxine, Carl and Glenda all preceded her in death.

Mrs. Spurling was always busy from sun up to sun down. She had a garden and raised chickens and had eggs. She spent many hours canning vegetables and meat to provide for her family. She drove tractors and combines alongside her husband. She also helped rake, bale and buck bales.

Marguerite worked at Mattingly’s and Woolworth’s dime stores in Mexico. She was also active in Carter Cavaliers 4H Club, where her children were members. She and A.D. made and quilted many quilts together. She made each of her grandchildren a quilt at high school graduation. In later years, she started embroidering tea towels. She donated many to various auctions, sold some, and gave many sets as gifts.

She attended Littleby Methodist Church until it closed and then attended Bethel Methodist Church until it closed. She then joined Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Marguerite and A.D. always sat right next to each other when they went anywhere in their truck or car. Everyone knew who it was when they came down the road. A.D. would drive and she would be nuzzled up right next to him.

She leaves behind one son, A.D. “Jr” (Betty Ann) Spurling of Mexico; seven grandchildren, Richard (Julie) Ensor and Robert (Tami) Ensor, both of Paris, Chad (Debbie) Spurling and Craig (Nora) Spurling, both of Mexico, Charla (Jose) Urioste of Merida Yucatan, Mexico, Teresa (Doug) Walters of Wytheville, VA, and Tammy (Todd) Sullivan of Parrish, FL; 17 great-grandchildren, Justin (Emily) Ensor of Ames, IA, Kathryn Ensor, Luke Ensor, Bryce Ensor, Brant Ensor, Brie Ensor, all of Paris, Ryan Spurling, Matt Spurling, Eric Spurling, Makayla Spurling, Caitlyn Spurling, all of Mexico, Marina Urioste and Mitchell Urioste, both of Merida Yucatan, Mexico, Jacqueline (Derrick) Holman of Winterhaven, FL, Austin Sullivan, Jacob Sullivan, Mackenzie Sullivan, all of Parrish, FL; and one great-great-grandson, Noah Holman, of Winterhaven, FL.

Herman John Merz of 369 Juniper Street, Florence, died March 12. He was born in Harbor, Ore., July 16, 1894, and was united in marriage to Geraldine Purdy in Turner, Ore., September 2, 1925. In 1928 he move to Ada, Ore., where he and his wife owned and operated a dairy ranch for 27 years. After the sale of the dairy ranch, the couple pioneered again, this time on a beef ranch on Ford Fraser, British Columbia, Canada. This they owned and operated for 12 years after the sale of which they returned to their home in Florence.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine; two sons, Robert L. Merz of Florence and David L. Merz of Fort Fraser, British Columbia, Canada; two daughters, Mrs. B.W. (Marilyn) Adkins of Fairfax, Virginia and Mrs. G.A. (Karen) Christensen of San Jose, CA; one sister, Mrs. Amelia M. Thorne of Coos Bay, Ore; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Mar. 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the Riverside Chapel, with Pastor Bernard Plumb officiating. Private interment will follow in the Ada Cemetery, Ada, Ore.¹
