Sarah Witter married Thomas Longley on 28 November 1866 at St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Sarah Witter died on 26 April 1891 at South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 78.1,2 She was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.1
KILLED WHILE GOING TO CHURCH.
In an Accident Mrs. Thomas Longley Has Her Neck and Shoulder Dislocated.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Longley, of Clay township, the former 84 and the latter 79 years old, drove into the city yesterday forenoon, on their way to Wenger church, just south of the city limits, on the Turkey Creek road. They were in an ordinary piano-box top buggy, and the single horse was a very gentle one.
At the junction of Columbia and Wayne street with Pearl avenue the electric street car track running to the power house joins the main track on Pearl avenue. In driving over this track the king bolt, which holds the front axle under the buggy, broke, and the buggy box dropped down suddenly and precipitated both the occupants over the dash board, and onto the car track. At the same time the jar broke the seat and top so they fell to one side. A young man named Peter Kline, who was passing, assisted Mr. Longley to his feet, while Mr. John Hupp stopped the horse which started to run up Vistula avenue after the accident. Mr. Kline, when he aided Mr. Longley, who was badly dazed, supposed he was alone in the buggy and began picking up the wraps and robes when he saw a bonnet, and then discovered that Mrs. Longley was under the robes.
She was carried to the Hackney house, occupied by John Primrose, and Dr. Kilmer was summoned. When he reached there her pulse had ceased to beat and there was the faintest pulsation of the heart for a few moments. Mr. Longley had recovered enough to realize the situation and was almost heart broken over the loss of his wife.
She had been in feeble health all winter and this was the first time she had ventured out for three months. Coroner Drollinger viewed the body and found that neck and shoulder were dislocated and there were bruises on the upper part of the face where she struck on the iron track. Mr. and Mrs. Longley had been married nearly 25 years, and many years after he had lost his first wife and she her husband.
Her maiden name was Witter. She was sister of the well-known George Witter, of Warren township, and Mrs. John Gibson of this city, and Mrs. Eli Roe at Buchanan. She also has brother Adam Witter and a sister, Mrs. Mary Wagner in Kansas. In early life she was married to Isaac Hardman, and by him, leaves Harrison and Ab. Hardman, and Mrs. Hansen Huston and Mrs. Cannon Smith, in this county, and Hiram Hardman, of the 21st Ind. battery boys in Missouri.
Her death will be as deeply mourned by Mr. Longley's children, as by her own. There are Mrs. Seth Hammond, Mrs. A. T. Greenwood, Mrs. Charles Wenger and Mr. Newt. Longley, all being in the county.
Mrs. Longley had lived in the county almost half a century, and was greatly admired for her genial temperament and Christian, ways. Shortly after the accident, Mayor Longley who is a nephew of Mrs. Longley, was notified and he had the remains taken to his residence on William street. The funeral takes place Tuesday at 11 o'clock from the Ullery church in Clay township, Rev. H. W. Kreighbaum officiating. The cortege will leave the residence at 10 o'clock. The interment will be in Grant's cemetery in German township.
