General William Lendrum Mitchell
M, #10494, b. 29 December 1879, d. 19 February 1936
Last Edited=15 Oct 2024
General William Lendrum Mitchell was born on 29 December 1879 at Nice, Departement des Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France.1 General William Lendrum Mitchell also went by the name of Billy. He married Caroline Sarah Stoddard on 2 December 1903 at New York.
William Lendrum Mitchell (December 29, 1879 – February 19, 1936) was a United States Army officer who had a major role in the creation of the United States Air Force.
Mitchell served in France during World War I and, by the conflict's end, commanded all American air combat units in that country. After the war, he was appointed deputy director of the Air Service and began advocating for increased investment in air power, believing that this would prove vital in future wars. He argued particularly for the ability of bombers to sink battleships and organized a series of bombing runs against stationary ships designed to test the idea.
He antagonized many administrative leaders of the Army with his arguments and criticism and in 1925, his temporary appointment as a brigadier general was not renewed, and he reverted to his permanent rank of colonel, due to his insubordination. Later that year, he was court-martialed for insubordination after accusing Army and Navy leaders of an "almost treasonable administration of the national defense" for investing in battleships. He resigned from the service shortly afterwards.
Mitchell received many honors following his death, including a Congressional Gold Medal. He is also the first person for whom an American military aircraft design, the North American B-25 Mitchell, is named. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is also named after Mitchell.2
General William Lendrum Mitchell and Caroline Sarah Stoddard were divorced on 22 September 1922 at Wisconsin. General William Lendrum Mitchell married Elizabeth Trumbull Miller (?) on 11 October 1923 at Michigan. General William Lendrum Mitchell died on 19 February 1936 at New York, New York Co., New York, at age 56.1 He was buried at Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin.1

(Posted Jun 27, 2021)
Edward Mockler died in Las Vegas, Nevada, on 15 May 2021, after a prolonged illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Edward John and Margaret Mockler. The family moved soon after to St. Louis, Missouri, where he attended school and graduated from St. Louis University in 1957.
He later completed a master’s degree in management from Pepperdine University. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Yvonne, their son, Michael, and Ed’s brother, Gary. Survivors are his wife, Sara; his daughters, Beth (John) Poe and Laura (Steve) Schultz, and his grandsons, Steven Schultz, Ryan Poe and Connor Poe.
Edward was commissioned into the Marine Corps in January 1958. During his 30-year military career, he served two tours in Viet Nam and rose to the rank of colonel. As an infantry officer, he served in command billets ranging from infantry platoon and company commander to command of the Marine Corps’ largest infantry regiment — The Third Marines. Edward was lauded for his efforts in establishing the Marine Corps’ Infantry Officers’ School —the first of its kind in the Marine Corps to provide second lieutenants with the extensive training necessary to become effective combat infantry officers. As a colonel, he commanded the 8,500 Marines and sailors of the 1st Force Service Support Group, was Marine Corps liaison to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and was the Executive Assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. He was a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
In 1990, following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Ed joined the West Virginia law firm of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC as the firm’s first executive director. For the next 15 years, he provided substantial leadership and management experience to the firm, growing the number of lawyers from 75 to 175, and establishing seven offices through the state of West Virginia. Ed was particularly effective in firm management because of his prior leadership experience in the Marine Corps, his outgoing personality, and his genuine personal interest in helping every person in the firm achieve as much growth and success as possible. Within the community of Clarksburg, where Ed lived for over 25 years, he was active in the United Way, Immaculate Conception Church, Harrison County Chamber of Commerce, Clarksburg Country Club, and other organizations. Following retirement in 2005, Ed continued to reside in Clarksburg, enjoying travel, family visits and the social companionship of his many West Virginia friends.
A Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday, August 27 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Casey Mahone as celebrant.
Ed will be laid to rest at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
