Elizabeth Perkins1

F, #5747, b. 1611, d. 18 September 1670
Last Edited=11 Mar 2026
Relationships
8th great-grandaunt of Steven Harn Redman
4th great-granddaughter of William Perkins
Elizabeth Perkins was born in 1611 at Hillmorton, Rugby Borough, Warwickshire, England.2 She was the daughter of John Perkins Sr. and Judith Gater.1 Elizabeth Perkins was born in 1618.1 She married William Richard Sargent in 1636.3 Elizabeth Perkins died on 18 September 1670 at Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2 She died in 1700.1 She was buried at Union Cemetery, Amesbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2 She immigrated on 5 February 1630/31 to Salem, Massachusetts.

ELIZABETH PERKINS was the daughter of JOHN PERKINS. Her family were all from Hillmorton, Knightlow Hundred, Warwickshire, England (for several hundred years).

Elizabeth was baptized on 25 March 1611 in Hillmorton, Knightlow Hundred, Warwickshire, which in the 20th century was annexed as a neighborhood of Rugby Borough. England began its new year with the Feast of the Annunciation, known in England as Lady Day and celebrated on 25 March. Previously in Hillmorton parish, two baptisms had been performed nine days earlier on 16 March 1610, while the next following baptism would be on 12 May 1611. So Elizabeth's baptism was a special event on a special day.

When almost 20 years old, Elizabeth departed with her parents and siblings from Bristol, England on 1 December 1630 on the ship Lion. After sixty-seven wintery days at sea, the ship sighted Nantasket MA on 5 February 1630/31, bound for Boston MA. The arrival of the Lion at Boston Harbour on 9 February with 200 tons of provisions and about 20 passengers was a joyous occasion to the people of Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Elizabeth and her family worked and resided in Boston for about two years, then they removed in 1633 to Ipswich, founded that year by 12 men and John Winthrop the Younger, who had also voyaged with his stepmother and half-siblings on the Lion. One of those 13 men is known historically as "William Perkins" – possibly an inaccurate name for her father John Perkins, since he settled in Ipswich with his family in 1633.

By about 1636, she married William Sargent (another of the 13 founding men), who was born by about 1611. He died in Amesbury MA after 24 February 1673/74 and before 8 April 1675 (inventory). They probably had seven children: Mary (Sargent) Watson-Challis, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, Elizabeth (Sargent) Colby, (probably) Lydia, & Sarah (Sargent) Bagley.
