Birthday Anniversary of the Oldest Member of the Family Gathered -- Over 150 People Attend - Dinner is Served in a Grove.

A reunion of the Bowman family was held yesterday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tilman H. Rupel, on Sumption's prairie, in celebration of the 89th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Susanna Rupel, the oldest member of this noted family. There were more than 150 people present and they had a delightful day. The reunion was held in a beautiful grove and 1p.m. a sumptuous dinner was served. This was followed by brief remarks by M. M. The principal address of the day was delivered by Mr. Osborn D. Rupel, who gave the following history of the Bowman family in St. Joseph County.

John Bowman, my great grandfather, was born in Germany, embarked for America, settled in Pennsylvania where he married and had three boys, John, David and Jacob, and four girls, Susan, Mary, Elizabeth and Catharine. He married the second time, and to this marriage was born two children, Benjamin and Esther. David, Jacob and Benjamin were brethren ministers, and Benjamin was one of power. He was a very large and powerful man, and had a sonorous voice, that after becoming agitated made the hills echo round him. My great grandfather moved from Pennsylvania to Montgomery County, Ohio, and settled on what was known as Bear creek, four miles west of Dayton, where he died.

All of his children remained in Ohio except Jacob, who, with his wife and nine children, moved to St. Joseph County, Ind., in 1831. His children were Susan, Catherine, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, John, Daniel, Esther and David. Susanna Bowman, my mother, the oldest, and the only surviving member of the family, was born on a farm four miles west of Dayton., O., Dec. 19, 1807, and got her schooling at the common country schools, and was married on that farm to Jacob Chord June 26, 1825. Six children were born to them, namely, Lydia, born Jan. 11, 1827; Mary Ann, May 16, 1828, died Sept. 28, 1858; Jonathan S., born Aug. 12, 1830, died Jan. 9, 1888; Aaron, born March 20, 1833. died May 3, 1833; Noah, born Feb. 2, 1835, died April 7, 1855, and Peremon, born Oct. 26, 1836, died Oct. 11, 1861. Jacob Chord, the father, died Aug. 3, 1857, at the age of 55.

Susanna married John Rupel Oct. 21, 1841. Three children were born of this marriage, Tillman H., and Tyra B., twin brothers, Aug. 21, 1842, and Osborn D., July 17---. Tyra B. died Sep. 8, 1861. Lydia Chord from the first union married John J. Rupel, Dec. 27, 1849, they having three children, Alice M., born March 30, 1857, Nora M., born Nov. 18, 1853, and Chord S., born Feb. 18, 1859. Alice M. was married to Jacob Woolverton, Oct. 6, 1870. Four children were the result of this union, viz: John J., Howard A., Earl E., and Hugh L. Nora M. married Arthur J. Quay, Jan. 27, 1877, who died Sept. 7, 1885. Chord S. married Mary Wagner Feb. 24, 1880. They have three children, Bessie, Charles and Roenie. Mary Owen Chord married James W. Robertson, who died Aug. 1, 1893, leaving four children, viz; Lydia Mariel, born Feb. 4, 1849, died Aug. 10, 1872, Schuyler Colfax, born Aug. 12, 1851, Anna, born May 3, 1853, and Susanna, born Jan. 12, 1855.

Lydia Mariel married Martin M. Miller, a physician, of South Bend; who died Feb. 25, 1892, leaving one child, Osborn Rupel; now a shrewd business young man of South Bend. Schuyler Colfax married Miss Callie Sweet, Feb. 22, 1877, having two children, Anna Fay, born Nov. 20, 1880, and Leslie M., born Nov. 27, 1882. He married again to Miss Lizzie Vinson Feb. 26, 1885, having two children, Irena, born Feb. 16 1888, and Neil, born Sept 26, 1893. Annie married Ephraim Peffley Nov. 2, 1871, who had three children, Mariel, Clyde and Edith, the latter deceased. Susanna married Edward Kimble; Nov. 6, 1877, having six children, four of, whom are living. The living are Ralph, Mary, Fannie and Edna. The dead are Annie and Emma.

Tillman H. Rupel was married to Rebecca A. Heaton Dec 21, 1865, and five children were born to them, two of whom are living, Herbert H., born June 1, 1867, and Howard Glenn, born Jan. 31, 1878. Osborn D. Rupel was married to Josephine A. Coquillard Dec 14, 1869. One child was the happy result of this union, his name being Alexis C., born Jan. 25, 1877, now a temporary resident of North Dakota.

Catharine Bowman married Abram Whitmer a Brethren minister who died. Eleven children were born to them, Jacob, Susan, David, John, Ann, Isaac, Daniel, Henry, Mary and Lydia, nine of whom are still living and residing in this county. Catherine Bowman was born May 3, 1809. Married Oct. 18, 1827, died March 4, 1893.

Mary Bowman married Joseph Hainey in June, 1831, and was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive, Eliza, Violette, Matilda Baer, Elizabeth Eisenbeis, Margaretta Ream, Rose E. Rohrer and John H. Haney of Wagon Wheel Gap, Col., Mary Hainey died Nov. 17,1894.

Ann Bowman married Samuel Rodebaugh in October, 1839, having three children, two living, Alonzo and Mary J. Galentine; Ann Rodebaugh died Sept. 12, 1861;

Elizabeth Bowman married David Rohrer, March 27, 1835, and was the mother of four children, two of whom are living, John, of South Bend, and Sarah Chamberlain, of Bourbon, Ind. Lydia having died left one daughter, Mrs. Flora Beitner, her husband being engaged in the boot and shoe business of our city. Elizabeth Rohrer died April 23, 1843.

John Bowman married Margaret Sutphon, having four children, three of whom are living, Alma, Mary and Schuyler; John Bowman died at Rothsay, Minn; in April, 1895;

David Bowman married Lucinda Hall, April 17, 1853; three children were born, Florence M., who married Calvin Shakes, a business man of Bourbon, Ind., having one child, Inez, Mary Alice, who married James Matchett, a banker and successful business man of Bourbon, Ind., and Hiram P., who married Miss Mary Dale, a lady of literary attainments.

Esther Bowman married Henry B. Miller, in January, 1840, who then was a struggling editor of an 8x10 newspaper at Niles, Mich., called the Niles Democrat. He afterward became a resident of Buffalo, N.Y., became, a member of the New York state general assembly, afterward a member of the Illinois general assembly and treasurer of Cook county, III., and it may well be said that he was a very sanguine and charitable man and one of the most shining lights of the relation. Mr. Miller was born April 16, 1819, died Nov. 19, 1889. Three children were the fruits of this marriage; William H., who married Miss Mabel F. Wilson; Kate, who married Mr. Fred L. Reed, who had one child, Mrs. Efiie Harper, and Clara.

David Bowman was married to Elizabeth Stull Oct 9, 1849, having one child, now Mrs. Grace A. Dubail, of South Bend, whose husband is a successful young business man. His second wife was Luzetta Fox, whom he married Sept. 9, 1876, having one child, Master John, who is to study jurisprudence.

Susan Bowman has had only 13 grandchildren, nine of whom are living, and 21 great-grandchildren, and but five of these dead.

It can be readily ascertained that depopulation is slowly but surely vending its course. Jacob Bowman was born in 1802 and died Sept. 18, 1868. He had two sisters, Mrs. Leer, who settled on the Mishawaka road in 1829, adjoining the now city of South Bend, who had a family of respectability, and a sister who never came to this country. Jacob Bowman's family consisted of Catherine, who married Adam Baer, an honored man, Samuel, now a candidate for county commissioner, and a man who has held many positions, of trust and emolument, and John L., who died at his home in South Bend during the last winter, a man or dignified and respectable demeanor.

While the Bowman family name not made any vivid marks of distinction as representatives in the national halls of congress, the supreme bench; the literary world or journalism, they have been at parity with the highest encomiums of honor and integrity. Those of you who have Bowman blood coursing through your veins, need not be ashamed of a single drop of it.

This reunion shall long be remembered as a bright beam in the chain of social and moral revolution: and the center of the orbit around which a few of the satellites in the perfection and prosecution of this assembly is represented by the untiring and unflagging industry of Mrs. Woolverton. We trust my good old mother may yet live many years, fully maintaining her vigor, for when she has bid adieu to all the cares of life it can be said that her career shines forth to the world with the brightness and effulgence of the star of Bethlehem, that located the birthplace of Christ.

A permanent organization was effected with the following officers: T. H. Rupel, president; George B. Beitner, vice-president; Mrs. Nora M. Quay, secretary; E.F. DuBail, treasurer. Susannah Bowman died circa 1898 at South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.^6,2 She died on 31 May 1899 at 753 South Michigan St., South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 91.^3,1



Susan Rupel

Susan Rupel, a pioneer resident of St. Joseph county, and the oldest of a family of nine children, all of whom preceeded her in death, died last evening at 6 o'clock at the residence of her late son, Tillman Rupel, 753 South Michigan street, at the advanced age of 91 years and five monnths. She had been ill since last Friday. About 6 o'clock on that day she suffered a stroke of paralysis which resulted in her death. Previous to that time she had enjoyed the very best of health and had up to within a few moments of the time she was stricken assisted with the work about the house.
The deceased was a daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Bowman and was born on a farm west of Dayton, O., Dec., 19, 1807. On June 26, 1825, she was married to Jacob Chord and to this union six children were born, only one of whom, Mrs. Lydia Rupel, of this county, survives. Mrs. Rupel is 72 years of age. In 1832 the deceased with her parents, husband, brothers and sister, moved from Ohio to St. Joseph county, and settled on a farm south of Mishawaka. Mr. Chord died on Aug. 3, 1857, at the age of 55 years. On Oct. 2, 1841, the deceased married John Rupel. This union was productive of three children, one of whom, Osborne Rupel, is living at the age of 54 years. He is the youngest of the three. During her life Mrs. Rupel has resided south of Mishawaka, on Bowman's creek, in South Bend and on Sumption's Prairie - from which place she came to this city to make her home last March. She was distinctively a pioneer of St. Joseph county, coming here when South Bend was a very unpretentious little village and the surrounding country was sparsely populated. Mrs. Rupel is survived by numerous relatives, among them nine grand children, 14 great grand children and one child of the fifth generation. She was a remarkable woman in a great many respects. The indominable will power which characterized the earlier inhabitants of the country followed her until the very hour of her death and the tenacity with which she clung to life when her death had been expected hourly for a week shows that nine decades of life had not borne heavily upon her.
Funeral services will be held at Sumption Prairie Advent church, Friday at 3 pm. Rider Smith officiating. Interment will take place at Sumption Prairie cemetery. The friends and relatives will meet at the resident at 1 p.m.

Harn, on 13 June 1936.¹ Carl Bernice Boyd died on 5 July 1949 at Rockdale, Milam Co., Texas, at age 37; certificate #34785.^3,2 He was buried at Waco Memorial Park, Waco, McLennan Co., Texas.²

     Carolyn Bernice Boyd is the daughter of Carl Bernice Boyd and Felicia Frances Booher. Carolyn Bernice Boyd married William Presley.

     Frank Elbert Boyd is the son of Carl Bernice Boyd and Felicia Frances Booher.¹ Frank Elbert Boyd married Maureen (?)

     Hustead Boyd was born on 16 February 1905 at Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.¹ He married Rachel Adnabelle Harn, daughter of Riley Adam Harn and Lillian May Crawford, on 2 January 1937 at Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. Hustead Boyd died on 29 November 1994 at age 89.¹ He was buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Weirton, Hancock Co., West Virginia.¹

     Nora Boyd was born in 1878.¹ She married Alfred Blaine Harn, son of John Thomas Harn and Harriet Melissa Sumner, on 27 April 1899 at Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.² Nora Boyd died in 1955.¹ She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., California.¹

     Samantha E. Boyd was born circa May 1849.² She was born on 31 May 1850 at Holmes Co., Ohio.¹ She married Cornelius C. Andress circa 1867.¹ Samantha E. Boyd married Jonas Ruple, son of John Rupel and Elizabeth Bird (Byrd), circa 1896.

     Stanley Christian Boyd is the son of Carl Bernice Boyd and Felicia Frances Booher. Stanley Christian Boyd married Gail (?)

     Terza Suzett Boyd is the daughter of Carl Bernice Boyd and Felicia Frances Booher.¹ Terza Suzett Boyd married Greer Donaldson.

     Audrey Alwilda Boyers was born on 14 March 1906 at Mobile, Mobile Co., Alabama.¹ She married Jay Franklin Walz, son of George Henry Walz and Nellie Pearl Rupel, on 6 March 1934 at South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.¹ Audrey Alwilda Boyers died on 14 February 1983 at Greenfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, at age 76.¹

     Susan Bracker married Ronald Lee Fletcher, son of Arthur Lewis Fletcher and Vileta Ann Booth, on 30 March 1974.

     Sarah May Bracket was also known as Sadie. She was born on 7 October 1874 at Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine.¹ She was the daughter of James S. Brackett and Flora Ella Russell. Sarah May Bracket graduated in 1898 at Bates College, Lewiston, Androscoggin Co., Maine. She married Louis Bartlett Costello on 14 February 1900. Sarah May Bracket died on 15 April 1957 at Lewiston, Androscoggin Co., Maine, at age 82.¹

Following obituary for Sadie Brackett Costello:

Mrs. Sadie Brackett Costello, 82, of 45 Campus Ave., Lewiston died. early last night at her home, having suffered a cerebral hemorrhage late Wednesday afternoon. She had been in failing health for several years.
Mrs. Costello was born October 7, 1874, at Phillips, Maine, the daughter of James S. and Ella (Russell) Brackett, and married Louis B. Costello on February 14, 1900. Both were graduated from Bates College in the class of 1898.
Soon after graduation, she joined the staff of The Lewiston Daily Sun, then five years old. She served as assistant editor, giving special attention to society news and material of interest to women.
She left newspaper work in 1901, about a year after her marriage to Mr. Costello, and devoted much of her time for many years to women's affairs and the Lewiston United Baptist Church's church school. From 1920 to 1927, Mrs. Costello served as district secretary of the Maine Council of Religious Education.
Mrs. Costello collaborated with the late Prof. Herbert R. Purinton of the Bates College Faculty in writing a Biblical textbook, "The Achievement of the Master", which was published in 1926. The book was written for the Maine Bible Credit Course and was widely commended. It was one of a series of four.
She and Mr. Costello traveled extensively, and they wrote articles on their experiences for the benefit of The Sun readers.
She was a member of the Lewiston United Baptist Church, of its Woman's Society, of the Bates Key and was a life member of the Women's Hospital Association and the Young Women's Christian Association.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, at 2 P. M. from the United Baptist church. Hours of visitations are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P. M. at the Roderick Funeral Home, corner Wood and Vale Street. Please omit flowers.

     James S. Brackett was born on 23 June 1841 at Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine.¹ He married Flora Ella Russell, daughter of Obediah Warren Russell and Sarah Anne Ellsworth, in 1874 at Maine. James S. Brackett died in November 1884 at Portland, Cumberland Co., Maine, at age 43. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine.¹

     Margaret L. Bradbury was born on 7 April 1843 at Byron, Oxford Co., Maine.¹ She married Jeremiah Heman Ellsworth, son of Thomas Ellsworth and Miriam Maddocks, on 10 April 1862 at Franklin Co., Maine. Margaret L. Bradbury died on 19 November 1911 at Riverside Co., California, at age 68.¹ She was buried at Welwood Murray Cemetery, Palm Springs, Riverside Co., California.¹

     Charles Braden was born on 4 February 1888 at Greene Co., Pennsylvania.^1,2 He married Freda Twyford, daughter of Joseph Albert Twyford and Peninah Harn. Charles Braden died in April 1980 at Rices Landing, Greene Co., Pennsylvania, at age 92.² He was buried at Hewitts Cemetery, Rices Landing, Greene Co., Pennsylvania.²

     Charlotte Marie Braden was born on 21 October 1924 at Rices Landing, Greene Co., Pennsylvania.¹ She was the daughter of Charles Braden and Freda Twyford. Charlotte Marie Braden married male Bolz in 1955.² Her Social Security Number was

     Tyrus Raymond Braden was born on 28 September 1928 at Rices Landing, Greene Co., Pennsylvania.¹ He was the son of Charles Braden and Freda Twyford. Tyrus Raymond Braden married Ethel L. (?) Tyrus Raymond Braden died on 30 May 1999 at Washington, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, at age 70.¹ He was buried at Horn Cemetery, Marianna, Washington Co., Pennsylvania.¹

     Jennifer Kyle Bradford is the daughter of Robert Bradford and Elizabeth Jane McCarty.

     Clyde Bradley was born on 15 February 1896 at Lewistown, Fulton Co., Illinois.² He married Irma C. Harn, daughter of Christopher Harn and Mary Levingston, on 8 August 1922 at Lee Co., Iowa. Clyde Bradley died on 28 August 1983 at Lewistown, Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 87.² He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lewistown, Fulton Co., Illinois.²

     Margaret Bradley was born on 15 March 1866 at Cayuga Co., Ontario, Canada.¹ She married Charles M. Purdy, son of William Hopkins Purdy and Christiania Maria McGlashan, on 21 May 1884 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Margaret Bradley died on 3 December 1935 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 69.¹
