Mrs. Ola Ford switchboard operator was answering numerous calls of condolence about the deaths of four young AC students and their tennis coach, Max Grubbs, in a tragic truck-van collision yesterday in a small town in North Carolina.

Her voice quivered as she attempted to hold back tears.

All she could say, over and over, in a husky voice, was "Thank you for calling."
Two staff members talked in low voices in the hall.
"Seems unreal, doesn't it?" one said. The other only nodded.

"The campus is just stunned. Dr. Cordell Maddox, AC president said.

On Sunday, two of the crash victims Eric Teasley of Greenwood and Donny Pankiw would have donned their caps and gowns and joined the graduation procession at Boulevard Baptist Church.

Their familles had planned to be in Anderson this weekend for the graduation. Their sons were graduating with honors. Instead, today funeral services are being planned for the two young men, two more members of the tennis team and their coach.

The degrees earned by Teasley and Pankiw will be hand delivered to the families by college staff members.

Their classmates will honor the memory of those who died in yesterday's accident Sunday during a special memorial service that will be part of the commencement program.

The campus today was almost deserted, with only the weekend graduation events remaining to close out the 1976-77 school term. The freshmen students have gone home. The sophomores who will graduate Sunday are still on campus, but classes have been completed.

Max Grubbs hat been looking forward to commencement, Maddox said. Members of the family have indicated they prefer for commencement activities to continue as planned because that is the way Grubbs would have wanted it.

"Max meant so much to the college all through the years" he said. "This is a terrible ordeal for his family and for the parents of the boys."
One of the first people to arrive on campus this morning was AC President Emeritus Dr. J.E. Rouse, who said "I just wanted to be here."

His association with Grubbs goes back to 1930, when both were students at Furman University, he said.
"He was playing football then. He was small, but be played." Dr. Rouse said

Later, when Grubbs was in business in Belton, Dr. Rouse was his pastor from 1940 to 1946 at the Belton First Baptist Church.

"Then he came to Anderson College in 1968, the year after I did," Dr. Rouse said.
The words came slowly, as he remembered the past.
"This just makes me sick, physically," he said rubbing his hand across his forehead.

When Grubbs came to AC, Dr. Rouse said it was as a chemistry teacher and
director of athletics, although at that time there was almost no athletic program.

"Max Grubbs," he said, "was a Christian gentleman, and he had a culture born in the boy."

Dr. Rouse recalled when he and Grubbs took a bus trip together to Bridgeport, Conn., when Grubbs girls basketball team was playing for a national title.

"You know, Max found his life here (at AC) and lost his life here." Dr. Rouse said. "He had been in business but he found more happiness at the college than he ever knew."

The personal effects and the clothing of the fatally injured students were being gathered this morning school employees. These will be delivered to the families or left for pick-up, at each family's preference.

As soon as college officials learned of the accident yesterday, staff members left to be with the individual families and with the two hospitalized survivors.

Today the legend of Max Grubbs was being re-lived.

"They would tell how he would get out with a hoe and rake clean the courts off," Maddox said. "And I've seen him myself, out there with a broom sweeping off the courts."

They were saying, "He did the little things and the big things. But most of all, he loved those boys."
A Belton resident recalled that when Grubbs was in the clothing business there during the 1940s, "he never said a bad thing about anyone."

He added, "You know you could go in his store, and if you started talking about sports, the customers just had to wait. But they didn't mind. They just joined in the conversation, too."
One of the "boys," Jim Owens of Charleston, who played in 1967-69 on the tennis team, called today. He couldn't believe what had happened and was remembering how "wonderful Coach Grubbs and Mrs. Grubbs had been to him during his AC years.

"I want to come to the funeral service," Jim Owens said.
This I all that is left now for "his boys" to do for their coach, Owens said.

'It was like a nightmare,' survivor of AC crash says
By JOANNE THRIFT

"It was like a nightmare We could see the truck coming toward us and there wasn't anything we could do."
Those were the words of Scott Dickey 20, of Greenville, one of the two survivors of a grinding truck- van crash which snuffed out the lives of the Anderson College tennis coach and four of the tennis team players yesterday.
The accident occurred on an upward winding curve at Linville Caverns, N.C. on U.S. 221 as the team in an AC van was enroute to Lees-MacRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. for a regional tennis tournament.
The van was crushed almost flat when it was hit head-on by the truck when then ran over the van and went down into a ravine, Anderson College president Cordell Maddox said. The back hoe on a low boy being pulled by the truck, then apparently snapped around and hit the back of the smashed van, according to reports by highway officials.

Dickey and the second survivor, Dihreu Rathode, 19, of Bombay, India, were seated in the middle of the van when the accident happened and were pinned inside until they were rescued.
Fatally injured in the collision were Max W. Grubbs, 66, AC tennis coach, of 422 Tanglewood Dr., Anderson, who apparently was driving the college van; Fazal Mahood Kahn, 21, a sophomore from Pakistan and captain of the AC team; George Eric Teasley, 19, a sophomore, of Greenwood; David William Owens, 19, a freshman of Easley; and Daniel J. Pankiw, 20, a sophomore of Waynesville, N.C.

Teasley and Pankiw would have graduated with honors Sunday from Anderson College Maddex said today their degrees will be hand-delivered to the families of the students.

Funeral service for the victims are: Mr. Pankiw Sunday 1 p.m. at St John's Catholic Church, Waynesville, N.C; Mr. Owens, Saturday 2 p.m. St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Easley; Mr. Grubbs to be announced later; Mr. Teasley, Saturday 3 p.m. Connie Maxwell Baptist Church, Greenwood; Mr. Kahn, to be announced later.
A memorial service is planned Sunday as part of the commencement program at Boulevard Baptist Church at 3 p.m. for Grubbs and the students.

Dickey is listed in fair condition and Rathode in serious condition this morning at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville N.C. They were transferred to Misson Memorial from Marion (N.C.) General Hospital late last night.

Maddox said Dickey has a fractured leg and abrasions and is conscious today. Rathode, who underwent surgery last night, has injuries to the diaphragm and chest.

"The nurse told me she thinks he is going to make it," Maddox said.

Reports of the accident by the N.C. Highway Patrol indicated the driver of the dump truck apparently lost control due to the loss of his brakes or some other mechanical failure.
Troopers Tom L. Adams and Joe Waldrop investigated and said the truck crossed the center line and struck the van head-on, demolishing the van.

Adams said the truck driver, identified as Leo Watkins, 38, and a passenger, Dan Williams, 35, both of Selma, Ala were not injured.

Grubbs had been with the college for 20 years, first as a professor of chemistry and as head of the athletics department. He had retired last year as an instructor but remained on for one more year as tennis coach, at the urging of Maddox. He was to retire as tennis coach at the end of this tennis season. He was the college's first women's basketball coach and had eight winning seasons.
He led his tennis team to numerous Western Carolinas Junior College Conference records as well as Region X wins and ranked well in national competition though the years.
Last year, Grubbs accompanied his team to Scottsdale, Ariz. where it won ninth place nationally.

A native of Banning, Calif., he had been in business 21 years prior to entering the teaching and coaching field. He had received B.S. degree from Furman University and an M.S. degree from Clemson University. He was a member of the S.C Academy of Science and the First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He is survived by his widow, the former Miram Black; two daughters, Vicki Grubbs Cox, (Mrs. Walter Cox Jr.) of Anderson and Caroline Grubbs Lever (Mrs. James Lever) of Marion and several grandchildren Funeral arrangements will be announced by The McDougald Funeral Home of Anderson.

Kahn was awarded All- American honors in tennis on the Pakistani Davis Cup team when he was a freshman. He had been planning to go on the pro tour after his two years at Anderson College. His body will be shipped to his native country.

Teasley was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George K Teasley of Greenwood. He had played two years of varsity tennis and was a 1975 graduate of Greenwood High School.

Owens, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Owens of Easley, was the only freshman on the tennis squad. He graduated from Easley High School in 1976. Funeral plans for Owens will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home in Easley.
Pankiw, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pankiw of Waynesville, N.C., was an honor student attending AC on an athletic scholarship.
