MRS. P. D. PENCE GLAD IS PIONEER; CAME HERE IN '56 (Patterson--Jan 2, 1999.FBK)
Has lived In County 78 Years and Has No Complaint to Make of Early Hardships
Another pioneer resident of Appanoose county admits that existence in the early days was rather strenuous, but she can look back and find much of pleasure in the early days. Mrs. P. D. Pence, of Moravia, contributes the following:

A few years later, father went to selling goods and that got to be a good business. Our goods were hauled from Ottumwa. Those days the people were busy trying to get the people clothed. Women were busy at the spinning wheel and knitting, they were not invited out to tea and clubs as they are nowadays. We were invited … to wool pickings and sewing … to make clothing for the needy children, while the mother … the cloth. They were happy … though. Mother's health … very good … homes … back east … a hir… the ….
