Statement from Dentons regarding Matthew L. Lifflander

It is with great sadness that we share news of our long time colleague, Matthew Lifflander, who died on August 15, 2013. Matt had a long and meaningful career that impacted the lives of many people.

Matt Lifflander had a successful and eclectic legal career for over 55 years.

He began his legal career as Assistant Counsel at age 25 to former New York Governor Averell Harriman.

Matt then went into corporate legal practice with Hertz Rent-A-Car where he became Vice President and Chief International Counsel. He capped that career after 9 years by establishing the Hertz Rent-A-Car franchise in the Soviet Union. He went behind the Iron Curtin to Moscow to sign it in 1969, a business "first" which made the front page of the New York Times.

From 1969 through 1972, he was Chairman of the Uniworld Organization, headquartered in London and New York City, and was President of the International Division of International Industries, Inc. Matt was also retained by The Ford Foundation for 9 years as a consultant to its Program Related Investment Division evaluating programs to finance minority business enterprises.

His political career involved high level positions in the presidential campaigns of Senator Ed Muskie in 1972 and for Senator Henry Scoop Jackson in 1976. He was twice appointed Finance Chairman for the New York State Democratic Party. Other governmental service includes Counsel to the Joint Select Committee on Election Law Reform of the New York State Legislature (1973-1974), which created the first campaign finance reform legislation in New York; Special Counsel to the Speaker of the New York State Assembly (1975-1978), during which service he was credited with developing the legislation that led to the "I Love New York" campaign. He also served for five years (1969-1973) as Acting Village Justice in his Westchester County community of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

He found time to manage three gubernatorial campaigns, two statewide presidential primaries, and serve as the chief fundraiser for a variety of statewide campaigns on behalf of Democrats. Twice he "left the reservation," in his words. In 1992 he was Chairman of Ross Perot's presidential campaign in New York State until Perot's sudden withdrawal, and again in 2000, raising money for John McCain's first presidential primary, serving on his national finance committee.

Lifflander earned nationwide attention as an investigator of medical practice problems as Chief Counsel to the New York State Assembly's Medical Practice Task Force during 1977 and 1978.

Lifflander was a published author and an experienced speaker who made a number of appearances on nationwide television, including 60 Minutes, the Today Show, Night Line, Cross Fire, CBS This Morning, and Fox's O'Reilly Factor, as well as a number of syndicated radio shows. In 1979, Matt published his first book, Final Treatment, The File on Dr. X, an exciting tale of his personal involvement in a major multiple medical murder case. Matt's second book, The Impeachment of Governor Sulzer, a Story of American Politics, tells the tale of New York Governor William Sulzer, a popular congressman, who took office on January 1, 1913, and was impeached and removed from office by October 17th because he defied the Tammany Hall machine. According to Matt, "It is a 100 year old political story that still resonates today with fascinating facts and famous characters." His Op Ed pieces have appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Albany Times-Union, The New York News, The New York Law Journal, The New York Sun, and other papers.

Matt had many memberships, although labeled as "most significant" his membership in The Legion of Reliable People, a secret society he founded in 1999 to honor people who always keep their word, no matter how difficult to do so.

Following obituary for MATTHEW LIFFLANDER:

MATTHEW LIFFLANDER

LIFFLANDER--Matthew, of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, passed away August 15th at the age of 80, following a brief illness. He was working on his third book and practicing law as the founding partner of Lifflander & Reich and Counsel to Dentons, up until his last days. The patriarch of the Lifflander family, Matt was preparing to marry for the third time. His main passions in life beyond his family were cigars, coffee, military and police hats, memorabilia from the 1939 World's Fair, pens, and politics. Born in New York City to Ben and May Lifflander in 1932, he grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. He received an undergraduate degree from NYU and a law degree from Cornell University. Matt's first job was on the staff of Governor Averell Harriman, and included the task of manning the phone on the night of prisoner executions. He later became a vice president and chief international counsel at Hertz. After he struck out on his own, the car rental giant remained a client. Matt gained many other long term clients, including Liberty Lines bus company, Zurich American Group insurance and Ralph Lauren Footwear. Matthew served as CEO of Uniworld, an international master franchisor of Orange Julius hamburger shops. He worked tirelessly for the Democratic Party for his entire life. Matt was chairman of the unsuccessful New York State gubernatorial bids of Howard Samuels in the early 1970s. He had key roles in several presidential campaigns, including that of Senator Ed Muskie, for whom he served as national campaign chairman in 1972. He was Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson's New York Campaign chairman in 1976 and New York head of the Democrats for Perot movement in 1992. He also twice served as finance chairman of the New York State Democratic Party. In 1979, W.W. Norton & Company published Matt's first book, Final Treatment, The File on Dr. X, a tale of his personal involvement in a multiple medical murder case. His second book was published by the New York State University Press in 2012. The Impeachment of Governor Sulzer, A Story of American Politics, tells the story of New York Governor William Sulzer, a popular congressman, who took office in January 1913 and was the only governor of the state ever impeached. He was removed from office in October of that year because he defied the all-powerful Tammany Hall machine. Matt's Op Ed pieces and articles have appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Albany Times-Union, the New York Daily News, the New York Law Journal, the New York Sun, New York Archives Magazine, and The Journal of Privatization. His unfinished book, tentatively titled Scamming America, was about the causes and costs of perjury. Matt's extensive public service included work as a consultant for the Ford Foundation, Chief Counsel to the New York State Assembly's Medical Practice Task Force, a five year term as Acting Village Justice in Hastings, and seven years as chairman of the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers. He also founded a secret society called The Legion of Reliable People (LORP), to honor those who always keep their word, no matter how difficult. He is survived by his sons Clay and Justin and their families -- including four grand children and two great grand children -- and his fiancee Sandra Isaacs. A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Shalom in Hastings-on-Hudson on Thursday, October 10, at 4pm In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers.

Minnie Inez Lilly married George Elbert Fellows, son of Adin Fellows and Viola Pettit, on 2 December 1896 at Purdum, Blaine Co., Nebraska.2

Harold Redman said about 1996, that his great uncle Tom Lilly lived to be over 92 years old, lifetime bachelor. Tom Lilly was the brother to Minnie. Estimate Tom Lilly died about 1968 and born about 1874.
I was unable to find a Tom Lilly in census records for the Lilly family, however, Arod Reuben Lilly fits the dates, not married, perhaps he is Harold Redman's great uncle Tom? Minnie Inez Lilly married George Elbert Fellows, son of Adin Fellows and Viola Pettit, on 15 April 1920 at Hardin, Big Horn Co., Montana. Minnie Fellows in Scotts Bluff County Probate Index 3-308.
